Rain droplets landed on my back as I walked along a cracked sidewalk. I had my small backpack slung across one shoulder as I trailed on. Detroit was quiet this time of night. There was hardly anything happening on the streets. My parents kicked me out of their house a few days ago. I was living off whatever was in my backpack and whatever I could steal or find. My parents were always too high on red ice to even function when I was little. I had to practically teach myself everything. They would hit me and abuse me. Being out here on my own is better, but not by much.

I felt the rain continue to fall down and soak through my thin jacket. I let out a huff of breath. I need someplace to stay tonight. I brought my hands up to my arms and cradled myself as I walked, hoping to warm myself up. A few strands of my wet hair were sprawled across my forehead and I darted my eyes around to look for a place to stay. I looked to my right and saw a small grocery store; neon lights emitting from the large windows. Upon looking to my left I saw a small bench with a roof above it. I could stay there. It's better than nothing. My eyes then drifted upwards and I saw a vacant looking building right behind the bench. A tattered fence lined the borders of the property. I need to get into that house. If it's abandoned, I can surely stay the night there.

I kept on walking on the sidewalk; crossing the street and passing the bench area from before. I was closer to the grocery store now to my right. I quickly peeked around my left corner and there was a large gate door, covered up by a faded green colored tarp. I looked around to double check nobody was looking and opened the gate; slipping through the open gap. I closed the gate behind me and gathered my new surroundings. There was nothing but junk everywhere and an old rusted up car. My eyes scanned the left corner of the small lot and there was another fence that was torn open on the very bottom. I looked behind the fencing and confirmed that it led to the abandoned house. I quickly slipped through the bottom of the fence and then stood up on the other side; dusting my pants off. The house was now right next to me. The color of the bricks the house was made of were all fading away to a sickly grey color. The rain had calmed down now and there was only a small drizzle coming from the dark sky. I stepped under the small roof that extended outwards; shielding me from the cold rain. I felt myself shiver and rounded the corner. I could see the door to the place on the end of the wall. The windows in my sight were all boarded up with old wood that looked like it was rotting. I leaned closer to the window and peered through the small gap in the wood. The house was a mess but looked empty. "Visitor! Ralph doesn't like visitors! They're nasty! They may hurt Ralph!" I yelped and turned around; pressing my back up against the house's outer wall. I came face to face with a metal blade pointed towards my chest. My breathing quickened and I looked up to see an android. "I-I'm sorry! I didn't know somebody lived here. I'm just looking for a place to stay the night!" I explained; putting my hands up in surrender. My eyes fell onto the large blue wound on the side of his face. I saw his eyes soften but he kept the knife pointed at me. "Visitors are dangerous.." He said. "Look.. What they to Ralph." He lifted his hand up and pointed to the left side of his face; turning a bit so I could see it better. I frowned. Why would somebody do something so horrible ?

"You don't have to worry. I won't hurt you. I promise." I spoke softly to the broken android. He looked down sadly and took a step back from me; putting the knife down. His LED blinked from red to yellow. "You must excuse Ralph. Ralph still find it difficult to control himself. Sometimes his fear makes him do things he regrets...Ralph has seen some hard times.." He pointed to his face again. "He's just so scared the humans will get him again.." His tone of voice broke my heart. I will never understand why humans treat androids so badly. "You can stay if you want. Ralph won't hurt you." He said and met my eyes. I'd seen his model around the park before. He was no doubt a handsome android. He wore a gray cloak around his shoulders; covering his android outfit. I looked at his tag and it read 'WR600.' He has to be a deviant. But I could care less. Androids deserve to be free.

"Thank you, Ralph." I spoke softly to him still. "What is the human's name?" He asked me. "My name is Y/N." I answered with a small smile. "Y/N.. Ralph likes that name." His eyes met mine again. "I like your name too." I smiled at him more. "I'll only be staying the night. I-I promise I'll leave tomorrow." I said. He jumped up and down; doing a little happy dance, and smiled widely. "Come on!" He motioned me over as he happily began to bounce towards the door. I couldn't help but smile at the deviant's innocence. He'd been hurt so badly. I don't blame him for not trusting me. "Come! Come on!" He giggled in front of me. I caught up with Ralph and walked by his side. "Ralph has lived here since he ran away! Ralph never goes outside so no one knows he lives here!" He explained to me as we reached the door to the house. "Humans come in to squat sometimes but Ralph just hides until they leave!" He giggled a little after his words. He opened the door and ran inside excitedly. I followed him in and he shut the door behind us. He stood beside me with a grin. "You can make yourself at home here! Ralph would like to get to know Y/N." He exclaimed. It must've been so long since he's had someone around. I gave him a soft smile and took off my backpack; holding it in my hands. I shivered some more and Ralph seemed to take notice. "Is Y/N cold?" Ralph asked. "Y-Yes. I've been walking in the rain all n-night." I admitted. "Ralph will help Y/N build a fire!" He said happily. "T-Thank you, Ralph." I said gratefully. I noticed a fireplace in the middle of the room and walked towards it; setting my backpack down in front of it on the dirty hardwood floor. I opened up my pack and grabbed my box of matches I stole from my dad before leaving. I opened up the small box and there were only 7 matches left. I already used 2 these past few days. Ralph grabbed some wooden planks from the floor across from me and put them into the fireplace. I smiled at his help and picked up a single match between my cold fingers. I struck it roughly against the side of the box, and a small orange flame started to dance around on the end of it. I tossed it into the fireplace and watched the fire slowly spread across the wood. I went back into my backpack and pulled out a granola bar. I opened it up and took a small bite out of it. I finished the last bite of the bar and I saw Ralph standing beside me out of the corner of my eye. I turned and looked up at him and saw he was holding a blanket in his hands. "Ralph found a blanket for Y/N. To keep her/him warm." He said and bent down; wrapping the blanket around my shoulders. I gave him a warm smile. "Thank you, Ralph." He grinned in response and took a seat on the floor across from me. "Why was Y/N walking in the rain? And why is she/he all alone?" He tilted his head innocently. I took a deep breath and sighed. "My.. parents kicked me out of their house a couple of days ago.. I don't have anywhere to stay anymore. That's why I was walking in the rain." I explained. "Ralph is sorry that happened to Y/N." He said sadly. "It's fine. I'm glad I'm here with you. It's better than staying with my parents." I answered truthfully. Ralph may be an android but has shown me the most humanity out of anyone I've ever known in my entire life in just 10 minutes. "Y/N can stay here however long she/he wants!" Ralph exclaimed. I smiled at him once more. "Thank you so much. For everything." I said. I looked at the side of his face again and titled my head a bit. "What about you, Ralph. What happened to your face?" I spoke softly. "The humans... They did this to Ralph.." He said. I reached out and put my hand on the side of his face. I gently traced his scars with my hands; careful not to scare or hurt him. "I'm sorry they hurt you, Ralph." I whispered. I moved up closer to him and observed him. He was so broken. He had no one to rely on. Just like me. I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him gently. Ralph soon returned the hug and put his head on top of mine. "Ralph just wants a family." His voice rang out quietly. "I never had a real family either. But.. I can be your family if you want." I pulled away from the hug and looked at him. His LED quickly flashed to blue. A toothy smile graced his face and he giggled repeatedly. "Y/N.. is Ralph's family!!" He cheered. I smiled at the android again and yawned; putting my hand over my mouth. "Y/N should sleep. Ralph wants her/him to rest." Ralph said. He then gathered me in his arms; pulling me towards him. He hugged me tightly and rested me on his chest. "Y/N can sleep here. Ralph will protect her/him. Y/N is his family now." He stroked my hair. I smiled widely. I have a family.
