Lovely Brides

"Can you believe it? Prissy Andrews will be married! To our teacher!" Mabel exclaimed, a bright smile on her face as she fell back onto Anne's bed. "It's so strange to think about! She's only a few years older than you and I.."

Anne grinned, "It truly is romantical, isn't it?"

Mabel stared up at Anne in adoration as she excitedly danced around the room. "It is, isn't it.."

Suddenly, she stopped with a sigh and a frown and dropped to the ground.

"Anne!" Mabel scrambled off of her bed to sit beside her. "Anne? What happened, Anne? Are you okay?"

Anne laid flat on the ground, her hands covering her face. "I wish I was a bride.. But no one will ever love me!"

"Anne? What ever do you mean?" Mabel asked, gently pulling Anne's hands from her beautifully freckled face.

Oh, how she wished she could spend her hours in Anne's arms counting each and every freckle adorning her face.

"I-I.. I will never be a wife! No one's ever going to want to marry me! I mean.. Just look at me!" Anne cried, letting her arms fall to the side. "I'd make a terrible wife, anyways!"

Mabel inhaled sharply before speaking, "Anne, you'd make the loveliest bride, not to mention how lucky someone would be to have you as their life partner."

Mabel wished Anne was her life partner.

"Do you really mean that?" Anne sat up suddenly, her blue eyes welling up with tears.

"I do. You'd look ever so wonderful in the whitest of wedding dresses.. Your hair tied into a braid.. and knowing you, I'm sure you'd have countless flowers braided in.. That would look so very lovely.. And it'd be in one large braid restiting on your right shoulder, showing off your beautiful dangly earrings... Your long dress would flow down and graze the floor as you walked. Your lips would be tinted red, as well as your cheeks. It'd.. compliment your lovely hair so beautifully.. Your perfect firey hair would stand out against the white of your dress.. and-" Mabel cleared her throat after she began daydreaming about marrying Anne. "I-I mean, I, um-"

Anne's mouth was agape as she stared up at Mabel. "I-I don't.. I don't know what to say."

"You'd look ever so exquisite, Anne." Mabel complimented again, "The most beautiful thing to bless this earth with her existence as she walks it.. changing the world."

Anne's eyes welled up with tears as she threw her arms around Mabel, pulling her down to the ground with her, "Oh, Mabel! How I love you so!"

Mabel's heart soared with those words.. though, at the same time.. It stung.

Her heart stung knowing that Anne would never mean those three words how Mabel meant them.

"I love you, too." Mabel spoke quietly, wrapping her arms.

But she vowed that she would learn to accept it. To accept seeing Anne somwhere else and happy with someone else.

She vowed to accept that, no matter what.

No matter how hard she would have to force herself to not hurt when Anne loved another.. a man.

She tried to tell herself that Anne would never ever, ever love her. She tried to make herself forget.

But her heart couldn't help but wish.

Her heart couldn't help but hope.

Her mind couldn't help but imagine living with Anne.. Loving Anne. Having Anne as her life partner.

Her mind couldn't help but wonder.. what if?

And those things.. those things would be the death of Mabel Barnes.

Loud chatter filled the church as Mabel excitedly played with the hem of her dress.

"Yes, mother! A proposal can't be far from now!" Catharine whispered excitedly.

Mabel's mother nodded in approval as the church room shushed.

Mabel stood from her seat as Prissy walked in, her arm linked with her father's.

Mabel knew she should be watching the couple.. the happy couple. After all, it was their day. They were the ones being celebrated.

But she couldn't take her eyes off of Anne.

Her grin was wider than she'd ever seen before.

She hoped Anne would smile at her like that one day.. though she knew deep down that it was only wishful thinking.

Prissy Andrews stood at the alter, looking as beautiful as ever.

As Mr. Phillips raised the veil from Prissy's head, the congregation of the church sat down.

Prissy shakily looked around at the crowd before dropping her flowers.

Mabel gasped as the gust of wind hitting her as Prissy ran by.

Mabel quickly stood, following Jane, Anne, Diana, and Ruby out of the church and into the cold bitter winter.

"Prissy!" Mabel shouted as she fell into the snow, "Are you alright?"

Prissy's angelic laughter filled the air as she flipped her veil back.

Mabel giggled as she and the other girls danced around Prissy.

"I feel so.. so.. so free!" Prissy exclaimed, leaning down at throwing snow in the air.

Ruby let out a shriek as it hit her in the face.

Ruby giggled as she balled up snow and threw it at Prissy.

"Snowball fight!" Mabel shouted, picking up snow and throwing it at Diana.

"Oh! Just you wait! Just you wait!" Diana pointed at Mabel after wiping snow from her face.

Anne watched in confusion as Diana and Mabel continued to pelt each other with snowballs.

Mabel laughed loudly as she fell backward into the snow, "Anne! Make snow angels with me, won't you, Anne?"

Anne smiled brightly as she laid herself on the ground beside Mabel.

"Oh, how I love snow angels!" Ruby exclaimed, following suit of the other two girls.

Diana, Prissy, and Jane followed suit. And soon, all six of the girls were making snow angels.

Mabel felt a burst of happiness each time Anne's hand brushed against hers while she made the wings.

Butterflies filled her stomach as she turned her head to watch Anne, a bright grin adorning her face.
