Another day of hard work. It never changes. The only thing you heard was the gentle roar of the kitchen vents furring your night shift at Denny's and it paired well with the quiet chatter of the 2, maybe 3 groups of people occupying the tables. As calm as it was, it didn't make you any less eager to punch out. 2 hours left still? Ugh.
Business was usual. As soon as the night rush died down, you were cleaning equipment, turning off stoves, taking inventory and all would be well until-

*Ding*

'He' showed up...

"Yo, I'm telling you, Pyro. This waitress? Really cute,"

Fucking scout.

"Mmmph mmph!"

And he brought a friend, like he does. This was pretty much routine now. Every night at 10:00 this guy would come in and kill the peaceful, late night atmosphere with his loud voice.
He was very talkative at that, and if that weren't enough, the stories he'd tell about his day usually involved brutal killings via bombs, bullets and the occasional frying pan. Other guests, coincidentally, tend to leave by the time he starts talking.

You huffed as you heard one of your coworkers, Denise, seat him in a booth. As the only waitress there at this time of night, he was all yours...again. You wiped the tiredness off your face as you prepared to venture out into the dining room with 2 menus in hand.

"And then I bonked him on the head, took the cash, and ra- oh hey!" Scout greeted you as you handed him a menu. It's every moment after it was already in his hands, you remembered he was illiterate and how he struggled to find any item without a picture that went with it. He'd try though, at least for you. Every single time.

Pyro, on the other hand, you knew could read despite the fact he always ordered from the kids menu. He could do it through the clouded lenses of his gas mask and all. You were always sure to give him a couple of crayons too. It was adorable how he'd scribble little doodles of unicorns and rainbows to the best of his abilities.

"How are you two doing?" You asked as they lightly glossed over the selection.

"I'm feelin' good. How bout you?" The scout responded. Stretching his arms around the back rest of the booth, he gave you a cool look.

"Just going through the motions,"

You stuck around chatting for a little while. Figures it wouldn't take long for the two to order so why walk away now? Watching him try to read and impress you made you smile. So did pyro humming as he doodled with a red crayon. Patiently waiting, you thought to yourself 'Scout at the Denny's...What will he order?'.

"Need a bucket of chicken here," he proudly requested as he put the menu back on the table with a slap. It took all of the energy that remained in you to not chuckle.

"I thought I told you we don't serve buckets of chicken here."

"Oh I thought you thought of me and got it added,"

You watched as he returned to the menu and pointed at a listing. It said 'chicken parmesan'. Well at least he got half of it right. "That's chicken parm."

"Yeah, yeah whatevs, I'll have that."

You took note then turned your head and brought your attention to Pyro who handed you his paper menu.
Immediately, you looked at what he drew for you. Giggling when you saw it was a cute little sketch of him riding a unicorn and you were even riding it with him this time!

"Wow! You're really getting good at this!" You exclaimed although it wasn't all that truthful. You just wanted to encourage him because the little wall in the kitchen where you hung up all his doodles was not yet covered and left too much actual wall exposed. He muffled back joyfully.

Above his doodle, he had what he wanted circled with the red crayon. Chicken tenders. Of course. It seemed to be his usual, even though he always took it to go so you'd never get to see him eat.

"Alright, I'll get the cooks on it." Tucking away your notepad, you turned heel and made your way back to the kitchen.

About 10 minutes had passed when you heard the bell ding, your que that the last order of the night was ready to be carried out. Both of the dishes steaming as you walked them over to the two mercenaries who chattered loudly in the dining room.

"Here you are," you set the chicken parm in front of scout and the tenders in front of Pyro. "Enjoy." You said with a smile.

"Woah, what the hell is this?" Scout grabbed your attention before you had the opportunity to walk away.

"It's chicken parmesan." You noticed pyro getting a little giddy in his seat as you continued to talk to scout. He almost looked excited for something.

The scout was grinning as he asked, "Tell ya what, I change my mind, you know what I could really go for?"

"What?"

Pyro started cheering and clapping ecstatically at what scout was going to say next.

"You."

At loss for words, you watched both of them throw their heads back in laughter in reaction to your red cheeks. You couldn't help but to laugh with them.

Eventually the two of them left, chuckling to themselves one last time. As you cleared the table before your shift ended, you saw the scout left his number on the table along with the tip.

Another day of hard work. It never changes.
