Quick PSA. Lets not fetishize people who are just trying to live their lives as normally as possible! (⊃。•́‿•̀。)⊃
Third person POV
Insecurities.
They ran through shuichi's head, invaded his thoughts, and took over his body. They left him powerless, yet somehow, shuichi managed to wake up everyday and make himself look presentable.
Thoughts ran rapidly through his mind as he walked, as if there was a heavy stampede of negativity in his head. It made his forehead ache and throb but he decided to continue his trek downstairs and to the dining hall.
"Hey, shuichi!" A voice called out to him. The yelling left a ringing in his head and blurred his vision. He was still able to see who had caught his attention.
Kaito stood at the end of the hallway, waving and grinning happily at the detective as if no one here had witnessed their classmates perishing right in front of them.
Shuichi couldn't breath, or rather he could but it pained him physically to do so. He had slept with his binder on the night prior. It was a dumb move and he was well aware of it. However he was extremely tired after another night of training, or at least that was the excuse he continued to give himself.
Shuichi waved towards the astronaut as he took minimal breaths in and out to not expand his aching chest.
"I was just headed towards your room." Kaito waited for the detective to catch up to him as he continued to speak. "Thought you might have slept through the morning announcement. Or decided not to come." He shrugged.
Shuichi sighed and decided to ignore his headache and chest pain for a while and speak, since he didn't have any hand motions that could portray what he wanted to say.
"Yeah, I um, slept through the alarm. Sorry." Shuichi gave his partner an apologetic look before staring at his open hands. Shuichi has a bad habit of moving his hands whenever he talked. He wasn't exactly sure why he did it, and had to be corrected a lot by kaito because of it. "I got ready as fast as I could."
Kaito smiled. "No worries man." He ruffled up the detective's hair as usual as his face suddenly grew a bit more serious. "The training isn't too much for you right?" Kaito looked at his sidekick with concern. He thought maybe shuichi's oversleeping had to do with their training.
But shuichi denied that idea. "N-no! Of course not! The training is fine, momota-kun," shuichi blurted out, a bit too loud he had to admit. "Thanks."
Kaito's serious expression deteriorated and returned to his common cheeky grin. "Alright then! I wouldn't do anything to hurt my sidekick ya hear? If you're uncomfortable with anything just let me know, 'Kay?"
Shuichi smiled as Kaito's confidence, which he admired oh so much, mostly because he knew he could never be like that.

Shuichi wasn't tolerant to pain. He hated it. He was afraid of it. Slight pinches, slaps to the head, vaccinations, etc. he couldn't handle any of it, which confused him even more on why he refused to remove his binder during his training with kaito and maki.
Maybe it was the fact that he had worn it for so long that his nerves gave out. He was trying to give himself more excuses and reasons to advert himself from his main reason: to not be found out.
It was ironic, really. He was constantly being told to figure out the truth of each class trial and the culprit, yet he couldn't handle anyone trying to find any truth on him. The idea that anyone might have would be, disastrous, to say the least.

Shuichi laid on his bed, almost lifeless, staring deeply at the blank screen in his room. It was almost night time, which meant it was almost time for him to get ready for training with kaito and maki.
He then stared dully at his binder that was sprawled out on the edge of his bed. He had finally taken it off, giving him some painless, deep breaths to take in for a while. However, the night time announcement eventually went off which caused shuichi to scramble back onto his feet and hurriedly get ready for training.
(•̀ᴗ•́)و
The painful breathing returned. As well as shuichi's headache, being outside seemed to make it bearable somehow.
Shuichi was back to wearing his binder. Another idiotic move. He knew all the safety precautions when wearing a binder: don't wear it to bed, don't shower with it, don't wear two at time, the time limit, etc. Yet somehow shuichi threw them all to the wind and already managed to break two rules.
"Shuichi! Hey!" The detective smiled and waved at his energetic partner, though it confused him that he was the only one outside.
"Where's maki," shuichi asked. Despite the way she acted, maki seemed to enjoy training a bit so it bothered him as to why she wasn't here.
"Yeah," Kaito shrugged and scratched his nape. "She said she wasn't feeling up to it, so I let her go."
Shuichi hummed. It's been a while since the training had been just the two of them, and honestly, he missed those times. Though he would immediately feel bad because he didn't want to make maki feel left out, not that it would show on her that much.
They started off like they normally did, push-ups, sit-ups, etc. It was an easy start up until now. Unlike other times, Shuichi felt air being knocked out of him and the feeling of being unable to move intensified. He knew without a doubt that it was because of his binder, but at this point there was nothing he could do. He'd feel bad for stopping now and ditching kaito since maki wasn't here. So shuichi just squeezed his eyes shut tight in hopes that it would take his mind off his shallow breaths and immense chest pain. It seemed to work for a while, since he didn't even seem fazed by the painful tears running down his face.
"H-hey! Shuichi! What's wrong, man?!" Kaito's exclaiming made Shuichi's eyes burst open and take in the burning tears. His pale arms eventually gave out and the detective fell on the pavement chest first, emitting a pained hiss from the detective.
"Shuichi, relax! It's alright man," Kaito's strong arms managed to help the weak boy back onto his wobbly legs. He was still supported by the astronaut's firm hands on each of his shoulders.
Kaito watched worriedly as his sidekick weakly wipes away his subconscious tears. "What happened shuichi? It was the training right? I told you to tell me if you were uncomfortable with anything."
Shuichi only shook his head. He felt bad for interrupting their training, especially in the way he did so. His face burned red in embarrassment and placed a hand on his chest.
He wasn't in the right headspace to tell kaito about what was wrong which was another thing he felt bad about. The taller male seemed to pick up on that and only pulled him into a gentle hug accompanied by his words. "You don't hafta tell me anything right now. That's ok." Concern was still sharp as he talked. He wasn't sure is shuichi was hurt physically or if he just wasn't feeling well because of their current situation, which was fair. One of the astronaut's hands ran through the detective's short, soft hair as a way to soothe him. "Just, be ok, man. We'll get out of here together, I promise."
Shuichi's trembling hands found their way to Kaito's back and embraced him. The detective sighed shakily, but in relief of Kaito's promise.
"We'll get out of here together."

Sorta angsty at the end for people who finished the game-
happy birthday kaito momota!!!🎂🎁🚀🛸🌟
Also, people who are currently wearing binders, please be careful with them! As I wrote in the story, there are specific rules when using a chest binder and it's very important to follow them. Even if you are safely binding, wearing a binder for more than eight to ten hours is very dangerous and can affect your breathing. I also don't know much about chest binders and wearing one so please do research on what is safe and what isn't when wearing one. Again please be careful when wearing a binder and good luck.
