I don't know how long I was running, but I realized that I had made it out of my town. I wasn't sure where I was, but it was full of vast forest and I didn't see any buildings. Just my luck, running blindly away from home and straight into No Man's Land. God forbid I run into any rogues. I stopped and took a breath, trying to take in my surroundings. It was hopeless, forest was everywhere and my only choice was to keep going. There were no paths or trails, and every direction looked the same. It was completely up to me to decide which way to continue, so I chose the easiest way: forward.

I trekked through the thick, but short, grass. There were trees and shrubs for miles, it seemed. I started to question whether I was going in circles. Still, I kept going forward.

After a few miles, the air began to feel different, less heavy but still full of moisture. After a few more steps, I heard a rushing sound and realized that I was getting close to a small river. I knew at this point that I was headed in the right direction, and I began to quicken my pace that had slowed from stress and exhaustion.

As I neared the river, I heard the movement of tree leaves. I hope I don't have to protect myself; I had only gained access to my wolf on my sixteenth birthday, less than two months ago, and had never found the opportunity to shift.

The closer I got to the running water, the more I got the feeling that I was not alone. To confirm that thought, I heard a nasty growl.

Before I knew it, some twenty-something wolves were crossing the river, straight towards me. Once they got past the rushing water, they moved quicker, growling at me and scaring me to death.

What could I do? I didn't have many options, if any, to evaluate. Running would be futile; there are too many of them and they are all in their wolf forms. I couldn't just sit and wait for my death. I wouldn't do that. No, I had to stand my ground in my measly human form. It was my only option.

As the wolves got closer, they began surrounding me, inching slowly towards me. Who was I kidding, I can't stand my ground against my own drunken father. How am I supposed to defend myself from a clan of ferocious wolves?

I backed away slowly. As I did, the wolves stayed in their positions and didn't follow me, so I decided I had made the right decision. The situation was going smoothly until one wolf decided to jump forward a bit and growl menacingly.

I squeaked, speeding up a bit but still keeping my eyes on them to show them that I was leaving. As I focused on the wolves, my ankle caught on a fallen log, making me trip and immediately fall over it.

I yelled in pain, gripping my thigh. It was caught in a bear trap. I couldn't move, and even if I could it would hurt way too much. One of the wolves slowly moved closer and I shifted back, once again vocalizing my pain as the bear trap settled deeper into my leg. The wolf stilled, moving back and barking a few times in a different direction. In seconds, a black wolf came towards the group. I stared, half because I was in immense pain and also because this wolf was so astonishing.

This wolf was different from the others. It had a velvety onyx coat with piercing blue eyes that had specks of green. It was also slightly larger than the others, and they all seemed to respect it.

The black wolf turned to look at me and didn't come any closer, as if it knew I was afraid. After a moment, it separated itself a bit from the other wolves and crouched. Its muscles stretched and its bones cracked loudly, and it took me little time to squeeze my eyes shut and try to zone out the sickening noise. It sounded so excruciating but before I knew it, a naked man was on the ground in the black wolf's place.
