I stretched my arms out as I walked out of the elevator and down the hallway to Felix's office. It was barely noon, but it had already been a hell of a morning. I opened his office door abruptly, not caring to knock as I made my way over to his desk. He had dark circles under his puffy eyes and even though he looked focused on his paperwork, Felix seemed glad to see me standing in front of him. I wished I'd had better news to greet him with.

"Good morning, Alpha," I said plainly.

"How many times do I have to tell you that you don't have to call me that?" He smiled earnestly.

"That's besides the fucking point."

I shifted my weight onto my palms as I leaned on Felix's desk, and he took his reading glasses off to show that I had his full attention. I continued.

"There was a rogue wolf this morning close to the river. It's been there off and on for a few days, but since the bastard isn't on our side of the river, we technically can't tell it to fuck off."

Felix looked at me as if I had just told him the sky was blue. "I'm sure you have it under control, Xander. You're in charge of the warriors and our border defense. Do whatever you feel is necessary to protect the pack. Do you think this rogue could be a threat?"

I averted my gaze in thought. "It has been edging near our border for at least a few days," I stated honestly. "The warriors that I assigned on border patrol have told me about it, saying that the rogue had fucking stared them in the eyes when they growled at it to fucking piss off."

"Mhm," Felix said, still listening intently.

"They said the rogue would go away on its own terms and seemed hostile," I continued. I wished it would fucking come over here so I could rip it apart. "Anyway, I just thought I should tell you, just to make sure you knew what was going on. I'll decide eventually whether to heighten security near the river or not."

"Like I said, do whatever you think is necessary," Felix said nonchalantly. "I'm sure you'll do what's best for the pack."

He put his glasses back on and resumed his mounds of paperwork, and I nodded at him before leaving his office. Felix was fucking irritating sometimes. I knew this rogue was probably some good-for-nothing dipshit but I couldn't brush off the feeling that it was up to no good. If the rogue was sticking around our border for this long, it must fucking want something, hell if I knew what it was.

After making it out of the building, I decided to go supervise some of the warriors training. It was kind of boring sometimes since most of them already knew what they were doing and helped each other just fine, but I couldn't think of anything else to do since I still had the whole day ahead of me and no dick appointments scheduled.

After a lengthy walk, I neared the training grounds. Among the warriors, I saw Aspen's little brother Leo practicing his kicks at stacked sacks of sand. When he saw me, his eyes widened like a fucking puppy.

"Good morning... I-I mean afternoon, head beta Xander!" He spoke bashfully, bowing his head.

"Morning," I responded, trying in a futile effort to conceal my grimace.

If Leo was here training, it usually meant that Aspen was here, too. And if Aspen was here, it definitely meant that that bastard omega and dipshit human were also with her. Fucking great start to my day.

Leo went back to kicking and I noticed his form was way off. He was trying to do a side kick, which was powerful when done correctly, but honestly he just looked like a fucking lunatic who was expending too much effort for measly results.

"When you kick like that, you need to put all of your strength into both of your legs," I explained. "The leg you kick with needs to have force, but it's also important to have a strong stance so that you don't fucking fall over."

I demonstrated for him, slowing my movements so that he could more easily understand what I was trying to teach. He nodded, and when I was done he tried the movement himself.

"Much better," I said, crossing my arms as I observed his form. Then again, anything was better than whatever the fuck he was doing in the beginning.

After he kicked the sacks of flour, he swung his leg down immediately and made a huge grin. "Thank you, Xander! You're a great teacher. Can I practice one-on-one fighting with the stronger warriors now?"

"I'm not head warrior for nothing," I said, ruffling his bright red tufts of hair. "And don't push your fucking limits."

The more I looked at the kid, the more he fucking reminded me of his sister. Aspen's red hair, annoying determination and bright personality was so fucking irritating. I shook my head slightly in an attempt to stop thinking about how much she pissed me off, but of course I looked up and saw her across the training grounds. She was teaching Luca some new techniques again, and I had to admit he was getting better, not that he'd ever be a warrior if I had a fucking say.

Unconsciously, I turned my gaze towards the benches and saw Elias cheering Luca on. His positivity pissed me off, too. But for some reason, I couldn't stop looking at him. Maybe it was because he was human, reminding me of my troublesome past. He looked so innocent but deep inside he was probably a ruthless bastard. I internally cursed myself at my own stupidity. That fragile thing couldn't even hurt a fly.

Before I knew it, he was looking back at me from the benches, fearful curiosity in his eyes, and he quickly turned away once he saw me returning his gaze. Something inside of me wanted to believe he had no cruel intentions but I still couldn't trust him, and I narrowed my eyes at him to make sure he fucking knew it.
