Chapter 1: Desk Partners
"Roy! Roy! wait up for me!", I yelled at the top of my voice. I couldn't miss my bus, not today at least. It was my first day at school right after the summer break. I wasn't planning to get to a handful from my mum. I loved my mum but she could get really unpleasant if dropping me to school made her late for work. Roy was our bus conductor. He had a soft spot for me because well, who doesn't?
"Hurry up darling!" Roy spat out. I slung my bag over my shoulder, kissed my mom and ran to catch my bus merely on time.
"When are you ever going to learn to be punctual Ginna?" Kylie sniped. I knew Kylie since we were kids. We became friends when our moms discovered that our apartments were close enough to take turns for dropping and picking us up from school duty. Eventually we grew close to each other's family.
"I try, I really do but those extra five minutes of sleep are so precious, I can't help myself." I mutter dryly. It's the same conversation every day. As Kylie and I make our way to school, I greet few people from our bus and a few more on the way. We make small talk about how we spent our holidays. Andy took a trip to the Bahamas, Joey and Sandy visited their grandparents, Kylie and I tell them about our time at the summer camp where we indulged in
many fun activities.
It's a normal day at Rosemount High School which is one of the most prestigious schools in Rosemount. It's my sophomore year which means by the end of this year I will not only be kissing 16 but also getting my own car. Yayy.
We gather in the school hall for the morning prayer and a quick fitness session. Girls and boys stand in separate lines in the order of their heights as we initiate the first command for our day. I wasn't fond of the fitness session at all. They made us stretch, jump, squat and what not. Needless to say, I wasn't a very athletic person. Although the exercises proved to be an energetic start to the day, it made me all sweaty and spoiled my hair. As soon as the fitness session got over, the principal addressed us.
"Good morning everyone. I hope you all enjoyed your break and are back with some pumped up zeal to start this year. Let me remind you any kind of recklessness with discipline won't be tolerated like always. I wish you all a very fruitful academic year and I am so glad to have you kids back. Now you can quietly disperse to your respective classes. Your teachers are waiting for you. Have a pleasant day."
From the word go, students started dispersing chaotically much against the principal's discretion to secure the back benches. Me and Kylie saw no incentive in doing that because by the end of the day, our teachers always changed our seating arrangements as they pleased. Yes, our school was a little too much when it came to discipline.
We entered our 10th grade classroom and occupied one of the empty seats. Our classroom had those benches where two people could sit together with some space for their belongings in between. Yes, our school believed in assigning two people a common desk to encourage team activities.
The class was roaring with playful banter, one in which even I indulged myself. I caught up with some of the summer gossip about celebrities breaking up, who hooked up with whom and some new couples who started going out during the summer. I heard Michelle Oakley even keyed Shawn Butler's car when she found out he had been cheating on her. Typical high school gossip material.
I said my hies to all my friends. Everybody knew everybody in this class. You ought to know everyone if you have been going to school with almost the same people for years. I liked to believe despite some factors, I was an easy person. I mostly made friends very easily even though I hadn't explored my type much. I was that person who was friendly to everybody. Yes, Kylie was my best friend but I wasn't closed off to the rest.
