Miho, Hana and Yukari travel to the hospital in the town of Ooarai to visit Mako and her grandmother, Hisako Reizei, who was admitted after she collapsed during the previous episode. The girls arrive to find that Hisako has regained consciousness and has seemingly recovered.

While his grandmother was there in same hospital with them visiting her old friend, and her grandson Iosif is stealing some medical supplies. And she slap his hand, told him that go back to the medical supplies equipment storage wing. He meet up with the girls, and they talk. They asked what happened to him, he change the subject about mako Reizei having no parents.

Iosif: So what to your parents?

Mako: Well we have arguement in car. My father who's driving didn't see the truck, he dodged it but there's a tree and...

[Mako began to cry as her tears is flowing.]

And Iosif just said nothing, old woman struck him in the head with her stick, and old woman, walked up to mako and she comforted her, turns out the old woman is mako Reizei grandmother. When Iosif's grandmother saw her grandson is being beating by Japanese old woman. With stick, and two old women talk and both argue about why she struck her grandson with stick. She heard her granddaughter is crying, saw her grandson is talking about her dead son-in-law and her own daughter. And Iosif just changed the about last night, and she already knew what last night. And Iosif didn't know that his grandmother is already knew about it.

Miho learns that Mako's grandmother is her only remaining family. Mako lost her parents whilst she was young: The last time she saw them, they'd had a fight and were yet to make up. Miho remembers that the last time she saw her own mother was under similar circumstances, after an incident relating to Sensha-dō caused her to leave her previous school.

Having lunch together the next day, Anglerfish Team celebrate their first tournament victory. They also discuss the odds in their next match, and Miho relates the backstory to her dislike of Sensha-dō. The previous year, Miho, then a student at Kuromorimine Girls Academy, had been the commander of the flag tank during the tournament final against Pravda Girls High School, competing for the school's tenth consecutive tournament victory. However, during the battle another Kuromorimine tank to slid off a cliff into a raging river. Miho abandoned her vehicle to save the crew of the sinking tank from drowning, but in her absence the Kuromorimine flag tank was knocked out, losing the match. Yukari assures Miho that she believes ensuring the safety of her teammates was the right choice.

Flashback 1 year ago in nishizumi resident

Shiho: You will carry on the Nishizumi school as well. The Nishizumi school is the one that will continue to move forward. Our tradition is to value, above all else, strength and victory.

Miho: But, but mother, I just want...

Shiho: You cannot be grandly victorious without sacrifice, you know that.
