Chapter 33: The Note

  Chase Goode walked out of his hand on hand combat class. He hung his head low as he walked back to his dorm. He ignored all of the people that called his name. He was ashamed, his partner had been a year younger than him and wound up going to the hospital wing. Chase wasn't a bad guy, he was surviving. In Blackthorne, if you didn't fight, you would die. He didn't want to beat up the kid, but he had to.

   "Hey, Chase!" Tanner shouted. Him and Daniel had tried to get his attention since the fight.

"Not in the mood for your compliments, Tanner," Chase snapped.
"Calm down, bro. We know you don't like to hurt people. We weren't even going to talk about it," Daniel said, holding up his hands. Oh. Chase looked at his roommates in confusion.

"It's about Abrielle," Tanner whispered. Chase put a finger to his lips. Tanner nodded. Chase grabbed both of his roommates by the arm and dragged them to their dorm. Chase shut the door and locked it.

"Alright, spill," Chase said. Daniel sat on his bed. Tanner ran his fingers through his hair.

"She had a picture of a girl and a boy," Tanner said. "They were out in a town. I didn't know if it was important to your little search or not. She threw it in the trash and I sort of grabbed it."

"Show me," Chase commanded. Tanner nodded and grabbed it out of his pocket. Chase grabbed it and stared down. His heart dropped. He held his breath as he stared down at the picture

"Anna," he whispered. His sister was in town laughing and holding hands with a boy. Wait a second, who was that boy? Did his little sister have a boyfriend? How did she get out of Gallagher?

"Do you know her?" Daniel asked. Chase nodded. He was debating if he could trust his roommates or not. He decided that he could.
"That's my sister," he said. Daniel's eyes went wide and he nodded. Tanner cursed under his breath.

"Her boyfriend is scrawny, we could totally take him," Daniel said confidently. Boyfriend. Daniel had said boyfriend. Chase sighed. His little sister had her first boyfriend.

"That's not possible," Chase said shaking his head. "She goes to an all girls school. They have walls all around it. How would she meet a boy?"

"Can she sneak out?" Tanner asked. Chase groaned.

"She's known for it." He shook his head and looked at the picture again. The boy wasn't bad looking. He was tall and blonde. He looked at his sister. Her curls looked adorable and she seemed... happy. Still, it was dangerous.

"How much trouble would she be in if people knew?" Daniel asked. Chase gulped.

"I have no idea," he jumped up from his bed and ran to his desk. "I have to talk to her."

"Dude, that's kind of impossible," Tanner said rolling his eyes.

"Difficult, yes. Impossible, no. My dad has sent me letters before. It's a system. I've sent letters back to him, too. It can be dome. I can do it I just have to limit what I say. It has to be cryptic," Chase replied with a firm nod.

"What are you going to say?" Tanner asked. Chase pondered the idea. He couldn't say much. It had to be short, but still get the message across. He couldn't say anything that could get either of them in trouble.

"Be smart," Chase said after a few minutes. "I'm going to tell her to be smart." Daniel gave him an odd look, but Tanner nodded.

Chase looked for paper that would let Anna know it was him. She wouldn't understand who it came from if he used his dad's notebook. After thinking for a while, he decided to tear a piece of paper out of Tanner's journal. It was issued from Blackthorne, so it had their logo on it. He scribbled a note and sent it.

All that was left for him to do was to sit and wait. He hoped Anna got his message. He decided that his next mission would be to spy on Abrielle. Daniel had just created very tiny bugs for him to plant around her living quarters. Chase grabbed the bugs and set out for answers.
