"Annalise!" I screamed as I looked for my daughter. I was searching through passageway after passageway. I was Cammie the Chameleon, I should have been able to find my daughter. She was just like me.
"Anna!" Zach yelled from the other side of the passage.
"Zach, she's not here," I called through the cobwebs. "She's gone." I made my way to the other side and was facing Zach. He looked... old. His brown hair was still dark. He didn't have the gray streaks like Townsend. Zach looked tired and stressed and scared. I hate when Zach looks scared, that's when I know that something is terribly wrong.
"Stupid!" He shouted and slammed his fist against the wall. "I should have known she would run! We should have told her!"
"Telling her only would have made things worse," I said, grabbing Zach's hands. "She would have tried to run towards the danger. She wouldn't have gotten to have a normal childhood." He sighed.
"She's gone," Zach admitted. I knew that she wasn't in the school anymore. She was somewhere in the world. I figured it might be easier to find her because she's only an 8th grader. Then I remembered that Zach and I are her parents. She may be young, but she's no amateur.
"And we're going to get her back," Chase said, walking into the room. Townsend, my mom, and Joe were all behind him.
"Let's go find our girl," mom said. I smiled.
* * *
"Diana, it's been a week. You're her best friend, you have to know something," I was saying to Diana. "Did she ever mention anything to you? Where she would go if she ran? Her favorite place? Anything?"
"No, Cammie," Diana said. She was frustrated. She sounded exactly like Macey. I sat back in my chair. I was sitting at a table with Diana, Caroline, Zach, Joe, Edward, my mom, and Chase. We all shared the same stressed look. There was no telling how many people knew that she was missing.
"Where would Anna go if she didn't feel safe?" I wondered aloud.
"That's not what we should be asking," Bree said. She had opened the door and was taking a seat.
"What are you doing here, Bree?" Chase asked.
"I want to help," she told us. Chase looked grateful. Townsend didn't look the same.
"Oh, I don't think that's a good idea," Ed snapped. "You've probably already alerted whoever you're working for that she's gone."
"You think that I'm in on this?" Bree asked. I noticed the shock on her face.
"What is it that you American's say?" Ed asked. "Is it if the shoe fits?" Bree's mouth was wide open. Chase looked uncomfortable. Rachel gave Townsend a warning look.
"Anna is my friend! Why would I have anything to do with this?" Bree exclaimed. I gulped. This was not going to end well.
"Let me think," Edward began. "First, You don't know her, yet you encourage her to sneak out. I thought you Gallagher Girl's were squeaky clean. Secondly, they get attacked when you're not there. What a coincidence. Lastly, you step in front of a gun and they refuse to shoot you. Something tells me that they wouldn't be that nice to anyone else. Oh, and shall we ignore the fact that you are a honeypot. One of the best, which is huge considering your age. Yet, you're getting close to Chase. Perhaps it would be nice to know someone on the inside."
"I don't know why they didn't shoot me!" Bree shouted. "I care about Chase. I just want my friend back! Let me help!"
"You would do well to keep your mouth shut, young lady," Townsend snapped.
"Stop!" I heard someone shout. I was shocked to see that it was Chase. He had never snapped at any of our family members. Townsend's eyes grew wide.
"I thought that you would understand, Chase," Townsend said with a glare. "I thought that you would do anything to keep your sister safe."
"I trust Bree," Chase said with a firm nod. "And if I trust her that should be good enough for you." Townsend pursed his lips. He looked to be weighing his options. I watched as he slowly nodded.
"Okay," he said finally, then he stormed out the door. Ed was always very close to Anna. He had a soft spot for her. I hoped that was why he was lashing out. I watched Bree look at Chase a bit stunned. I knew that she was grateful for his support. Chase just stared at the ground.
"Okay," mom said, bringing our attention back to the matter at hand. "Where would Anna go to feel safe?"
"That's not the question to ask," Bree said.
"What do you mean?" I asked her.
"Think about it," Bree began. "She just figured out that everything she knew was a lie. She doesn't know who to trust. She thinks that anyone she trusts could actually be dangerous. She wouldn't go to who she trusts. She'd go to the people you trust," Bree said to me. I was a bit stunned. I had never thought of things that way, but it made perfect sense.
"So who does she know that we trust? Who would she be able to talk to without raising suspicion?" Zach asked.
My mouth dropped open. It clicked in my head. The day I told Anna about Josh. She had met him. I told her how close I got to him and how much I trusted him. Right now Anna knew that her life wasn't safe. Ours lives never were, we weren't normal. I should have known that that's exactly where she would go. A place where she would be normal.
"Get in the car," I said grabbing my keys.
"Where are we going?" Zach asked.
"To get our daughter back."
