The feelings that Nyx was emoting were too much. She wasn't supposed to feel that way. The burning realization of finally getting somewhere. It was as though her whole life had been a pointless mess of years spent inside of a house that wasn't even her own.

Nyx started to worry that her world was made of paper-thin glass, and all it took was for one person to tap the glass for it to crack. That crack was slowly growing, like a spiderweb of truth attempting to flood in.

All it took was the girl. Hemera Leora Danaus. No, she said to call her Leo. What an exquisite name. As soon as Leo left, Nyx found herself speaking her name into the empty house. It echoed back at her like a dirty secret. It rolled off of her tongue so perfectly that it made her chest hurt. A lyrical name for a lyrical voice.

In the hours where Nyx waited for Diane to return home, she found herself pacing throughout the house, unable to sit still. Every few minutes, she would say the name again and then squeal softly to herself. What was that feeling? Her chest was aching, and she almost wanted to cry though she didn't know why.

When Diane did unlock the door and walk inside, Nyx was relieved to find that she didn't smell sour. She had armfuls of groceries, and Nyx wasted no time grabbing some from her mother and carrying them into the kitchen.

"How was your day?" She asked, biting down that incessant smile that had been capturing her lips ever since Leo left.

Nyx couldn't help but start to consider her offer. She wanted so desperately to let the ghosts of all of her inner fears and dreams out. But she couldn't do so with Diane, because she was the one that she was hiding from. What if Leo became her friend? Nyx never had a friend before. Well, outside of Diane, of course.

"It was alright. Long, but it's over now." Diane replied, opening the fridge to place all of the cold groceries inside. Nyx stood on the opposite side of the island, arms folded on top of the faux marble surface. She was leaning over it slightly, watching her mother.

"What's it like having a job?" Nyx found the question slipping from parted lips before she could stop it. She fidgeted with a loose strand of black hair, hoping that it didn't sound too much like want.

When Nyx was little, she quickly decided that her dream job was to be some sort of farmer or gardener. To be able to work outside all day would be absolutely perfect. But Diane said that she worked in an office of some kind, never going into too much detail because she knew that Nyx wouldn't understand anyway. Nyx wanted to be able to understand.

"Why do you ask?" Diane asked, voice remaining level. It made Nyx a little nervous.

"I don't know. I was just curious, because it must be hard. You work really hard." She attempted to save herself, appearing oblivious as to how that may come across as something she didn't like.

Diane looked at the short girl for a long moment, before resuming putting the produce away. "It's like you said, hard work. Now quit worrying your pretty little head with adult problems and help me put stuff away."

Swallowing, Nyx nodded quickly and did as her mother said. There was so much more she wanted to ask, but she didn't want to be scolded. So she kept her questions to herself. But they were getting harder and harder to silence.
