There were things that scared Hemera Leora, and there were things that exhilarated her. She was enamored by the night, unable to get her mind off of it. The concept of being one with nocturnal animals seemed so enchanting and romantic. The fact that someone out their truly lived like that opened her eyes up to the dark side of the world.

What scared her was that someone out there begged for nothing more than to live diurnal like all of the other humans. To be free like the wind. It made her suppressive family feel so lenient and merciful. Though they had an early curfew and an early bedtime set up, at least they allowed her to be known and know of reality.

But that was not how things were for Nyx Alisman. After having lived on that same street for half of her life, the first half she lived in England, Leora never knew that Nyx existed. But now she did, and she knew that she would never be able to forget her.

That light and airy voice, as though she was scared to speak too confidently, was forever engrained in her memory. And then there was that face. Nyx was elegant in the looks department.

Her extremely porcelain skin created a vivid contrast from those large and bright blue eyes, with naturally long and dark lashes to frame them. She appeared to be tired, which after doing some research, Leora found out that insomnia was a key symptom of a vitamin D deficiency. Her build seemed to be rather small, and her hair appeared to be very long from the small frame that Leora could see her in.

She had lips so lightly colored that they blended into her complexion, and her eyebrows arched softly. She wasn't just beautiful, she was bewitching and graceful. Leora had no idea if she was truly either of those things, but she at least appeared that way.

Leora knew that there was something different about her, excluding their difference in lives. There was something about her voice and looking into those eyes that made Leora lose her breath, and for her heart to double its speed. She wanted to know everything about Nyx's life and to help her cope with the truth of it all. She just wanted to be her first ever friend.

That was why she stood on that same porch. Each time that she came, Leora found that she was always more exited and more fearful than the last. She was admittedly scared of what kind of a sick human would do something like that to their child. To force them to remain in the confines of the same home for years without ever telling them what may go on when they leave. That was something so sinister that it made Leora sick to think about it. And that was all that she had been thinking about ever since she first discovered Nyx.

But she was every bit as excited to be able to talk to her again and to be able to learn more. That was why she always returned. To get her out of that twisted home. "Nyx? Nyx, I'm here."

It didn't take long for Nyx to appear in the window, a nervous look on her face that effectively conveyed just how horrifying it truly was for her.

It was a Monday, and Leora had been forced to subject herself to a long day of trying to focus in school. She still hadn't told anyone. She was going to walk down to the police station with Nyx, and from there, things were going to escalate. For now, they would take it slow.

"It's okay, we can take things slow." Leora assured her, tentatively grabbing the doorknob and turning it slightly. It was locked. "Start with unlocking the door."

There was a very long moment of silence as Leora guessed that Nyx was struggling to take that first step. She wanted to be able to hug her and prove just how much it was going to be okay. But she couldn't do anything other than wait patiently, because there was a door in between them. Nyx had to be the one to remove that barrier.
