If you were to ask Harper what the tipping point was she would promptly crack a smile and make a stupid joke about her stepmom. Something Cinderella-esque or placing the blame on her half-sister Claire. It was a lie, of course, but they didn't need to know that.
The tipping point was in all actuality the fact that she couldn't stand being around her dad. The man had expectations for her. She had to be perfect. The perfect daughter, willing to help out around the house and the council. The perfect sister, being willing to babysit every grueling moment after school. The perfect student with those straight A's. She made it seem so effortless.
Trust her and the patch of hair turning gray when she says it isn't.
Her stepmom, Maya, was the first to notice how irrefutably exhausted the girl was. How bad the eyebags had settled. She brought it up again and again with her dad until finally, he relented. Only after catching his daughter in the midst of an emotional breakdown, but points for effort.
It was settled that evening. She would finish the school year living with Aunt Emily in La Push. The trouble promptly started two minutes after she arrived when three raucous boys came barreling through the doorway.
