So sorry to interrupt, I just wanted to let those of you who do not watch the show to know that Alec Proposed to Lydia. If you forgot or I forgot to mention her, Lydia is the enclave from the Clave who took over the institute. Her lover was killed and she respects Alec's family and Alec. Alec was trying to do what was best for his family. I was going to write this in for the story, but it wasn't exactly a Malec moment so...I decided against it. Annnyway, I hope you like the story!

I cross my arms and stand next to my father as Magnus secures the wards, my expression impassive as it should be. I admit I was tempted to run away when he approached. He gives me this feeling. This wonderful feeling that I can not let myself anywhere near. It threatens my mask of constant emotionless energy. This vulnerability and around my father is terrifying. I know what my father would do if he found out how I felt about Magnus. He would cast me out before I could even beg him to let me stay. But I hold my ground.
"Are the wards solid now? Nothing will get through?" My father says. A level of power in his tone. I only glance at him through the side of my eye.
"Even my magic has limits. The wards won't hold off that Forsaken attack. But my protections will slow them down." Every word he says is garnished with a flourish of his hands or his tone. Every sentence, a ballet.
"Extra time is priceless." My father says.
"No, say that after you get my bill." It's taking everything I have to not smirk at that, or even let out a small crack of a smile. I reshuffle my hands behind my back to distract myself. I can feel my father's presence next to me. And everything I've spent my entire life trying to hide at risk. I swallow and keep looking ahead.
"Lydia will take care of that." Lydia. I almost forgot for a second. Lydia. My fiancé. I grit my teeth as a fresh slap of pain hits my heart. I proposed to her. She will never love again. I will never let myself love. This way we can both keep ourselves in line. Combine our family name and honor. But a fiancé is a fiancé. Now that Magnus is standing in front of me, I see everything I lost. I swallow but keep composed. It was the right thing to do. For the family. My father nods and steps away and out of sight. Relief washes over me.
"A Forsaken wound often needs a little warlock TLC. May I? Uh, free of charge." I quickly turn to face him. Magnus points to my bicep, a bandage covers a deep cut from that Forsaken creature. He starts to reach towards it and I feel my face heat up suddenly.
"It's okay. I'm fine." I say a little too harshly. I don't want to hurt him. I just want him to leave me alone. It's hard enough knowing what I am without him around bringing it up. I glance around to make sure no ones looking at us.
"If anything were to happen to you–" His voice is smooth and sincere. He stares into my eyes. His glamored dark ones almost twinkling. I tear my eyes away.
"Magnus. I'm good. All right? I gotta–"
"Go? Of course. You're a busy man. And I should find this Lydia person. Payment upfront is just smart business. Where might I find her?" He tries to make eye contact again for the last part. I will not let him. Why does he keep trying to get me?!
"I haven't seen her. But if I do, I'll send her your way." My voice is stern and professional. I turn without another word and leave the room. I'm not going to tell him about Lydia. Not now.
