Let it begin

"This process will most likely be uncomfortable Ms. Graceland."  Severus' icy voice chilled me.

"Alright. Let's get this over with."

Pain seared through my skull. Darkness stretched out before me sending more waves of pain.  Specks of light twinkled like thousands of stars.

"What is this?" Severus' voice floated from some far away place.

This is the same shadow I ran through in the forest that night. Maybe if I get to the other side it will break this fog? Do I want to remember the rest? All the memories that have snuck through at this point have been awful. But maybe if I remember, I can save all of them.

I took a steadying breath. Right let's do this. I ran towards the closet light.

The room was cold and dark. Menacing laughter echoed through the room.

"The doctor is going to make quick work of you monster."  The guard said with a thick accent.

But quick wasn't what "the doctor" had in mind. Every slice was precise. Screams. My screams filled the air echoing off dirt walls.

I gasped, begging the air to fill my lungs faster. Severus' hands were on my shoulders. I blinked trying to get hold of my surroundings.

"What...what happened?" I took several more ragged breaths.

"You got locked inside one of your memories. I almost couldn't get you out again."

"Locked inside? Is that even possible?" I chewed my lip.

"I've never seen it before. Normally the memories could come through as flashes or what muggles calm movies."  Severus took a step back from me. "I will discuss it with the head master, but Eris. I do not believe it is safe to try it again."

I merely nodded. My one chance at remembering who I might be is probably gone forever. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes.

Damnit! Damn it all to the abyss!

"We have to keep trying." I did my best to keep my voice steady.

"Absolutely not!" Severus snapped.

"If I were anyone else you wouldn't hesitate." I snarled back. "You said things would have to be different. This is different! Not caring about me more than any other student is different!"

"I care about all my students! Why do you think I push them so hard and do my best to keep them so far away?!" He took a deep breath. More calmly he said, "I can't let them get close to me or begin to suspect."

"I..." I studied the floor unable to look him in the eye, "I'm sorry."

"No more. Until we find away to do it without you getting trapped in your own mind." He heaved a sigh.

"Ok." I tried to pretend tears weren't running down my cheeks. "No more."

The dorm was dark when I returned. None of the other students seemed to be awake or maybe they were gone. Regardless I was happy to be alone.

Damn it all! I rubbed my eyes much harder than necessary. Damn it! Damn it damn it!! I need to know! I need to remember!

The few memories that had slipped through were useless without the other. I felt like a puzzle with missing pieces. What now?

"Hey are you ok?" Tracy's voice nearly sent me into the ceiling.

"Yeah I'm good. Is everything ok?"

She glanced around at the other beds nervously. "Yeah everything is great."

"I know we don't really know each other, but if you ever need someone to talk to I'll be here." I gave her a warm smile.

She gave me a small one back with a nod. "Thanks."

I returned her smile and nod. I watched as she climbed into her own bed. She seems so sad and afraid. Though I guess I can't blame her if she is.

Much to my surprise the next morning Tracy sat down with me at breakfast. I could see the sneers on her friends' faces from the opposite end. Interesting.

"Morning." I said shoveling some ham and eggs into my mouth.

"Morning." She barely got above a whisper.

She glanced occasionally over at her "friends"

I felt a pang of guilt, when I first met her I pegged her as your stereotypical prep, but that seems to not be the case.

"What's their problem?" I glared at the whispering group.

"There's no problem." Tracy said a bit to quickly.

"I see." I frowned deeply at her. "Don't worry about it."

Now she frowned. I gave her a mischievous grin. Spending time with the trouble making Wesley twins was time well spent. They would think twice before messing with her again.

Fred and George were all to happy to oblige with some of their greatest Wesleys Wizard Wheezes.

"This one."  George said quite seriously.

"Is still in the experimental stage." Fred said with a mischievous grin.

"Define experimental?" I gave an equally mischievous smile.

"She may break out with a face full of pimples..." Fred started.

"Or she may wind up in the hospital wing." George finished.

"Perfect." I smiled like a Cheshire Cat.

Draco and Pansy gorged themselves on puking pastels. Madame Pomfrey was at her wits ends with Slytherin students by the end of the day.

The beat perhaps was Tracy's "best friend." The powder I slipped in her makeup worked just as intended. Nearly every inch of her face was covered in ugly oozing boils.  Her cried could be heard all the way across the great hall.

I don't think I've ever seen Fred or George so excited. I discreetly high fived them as I made my way to potions.

The dungeon was colder than usual. I wonder is it has something to do with the potion we're brewing or if Severus' bad moods really can drop the temperature ten degrees?

"Miss Graceland." Speaking of temperature dropping moods. "Detention."

"For what?!" I snapped forgetting that I am now his student not his lover.

"For attacking your fellow students." He growled. "I am so dumb as to not know the only Slytherin that could get their hands on something from the Griffindors."

"I'm afraid Professor," I smiled sweetly, "that I have no idea what you're talking about."

"I'm sure." He rolled his eyes. "Detention for the rest of the month for the sass."

I started to object when Tracy grabbed my sleeve tugging me away.

"Please." She whispered.

"Now will you tell me what's going on?" I raised a brow.

She shifted nervously. "I'll tell you after class."
