EIGHT YEARS AGO

I have never been more excited for a Friday to come than this Friday.

It's the first thing on my mind when I wake up.

Today is my first date with Lily.

I can't help the smile that comes over my face when I think about it; when I think about her and her smile and her laugh and her voice.

She's the only thing that's taken up my thoughts ever since I met her.

Jesse, my roommate, tells me that I'm an absolute weirdo, but I don't really care because Lily agreed to go on a date with me. As freshmen, we live on campus, in our dorms and in the next year, Jesse and I plan to get an apartment close by.

In the short time that I've known Jesse, I've learnt that I like him.

He's a nice guy, who minds his own business at most times, is good fun to be around, is fairly clean and doesn't really care that I can be straightforward. In fact, he tells me that he prefers to have a roommate who actually says what he means, without bottling it up and trying to hint at things.

When I walk out of our shared bathroom, Jesse is pulling a t-shirt over his head. He looks over at me and smiles, knowingly.

"I know why you're smiling, Romeo," he tells me.

I pick up the rubber stress ball that's on his desk and throw it at him because I'm smiling and I know that he knows why. Jesse catches it and laughs.

"I'm just amazed that you didn't draw a heart around today's date on the calendar and spend your week crossing the dates off it," he says, volleying the ball between his hands.

I pick up the rubber stress ball that's on my desk and throw it at him, still smiling.

Jesse catches that as well and begins to juggle both balls. "You can throw as many as you want at me, Marco, I can juggle. Not only can I juggle these stress balls, but I can also juggle juggling and a conversation with you. So, you look like you're just about bursting at the seams. Excited much?"

I can't throw another rubber stress ball at him because he's holding the only two that we have, so, I lean against the edge of my desk and nod at the thought of seeing Lily and making her smile.

"Oh, God, dude," Jesse tells me as he shuts the door to his wardrobe, "You've got it bad and you haven't even been on a date with her yet."

I shrug, unable to wipe the smile off of my face. "I really like her."

Jesse sits down on his bed and begins to juggle again. It's something he's quite good at. "You barely know her," he tells me.

He's not wrong. I don't know much about Lily, but I have a good feeling about her. I have a feeling that I'm going to have a good feeling about her for a long time.
