JALANDHAR, PUNJAB, INDIA

It was a beautiful evening when most of the people were going back to their homes from their office. The same case was with Naina. She was driving back to her home when she got a phonecall from her mother Navjot. She connected her phone to the Bluetooth and picked up the call. "Hanji mummy ki hoya?" (Hanji mummy kya hua?) , Naina said in her chirping voice.

Her mother asked in a lovely yet concerned tone, "Naina tu halle tak office ch hi hai?" (Naina tu abhi tak office me hi hai?).

"Nhi mummy, tusi tension na lavo, mai car drive kar rhi haa..punj mint tak ghar pohoch jaavangi" (Nhi mummy, tension mat lo, mai car drive kar rhi hu..paanch minute tak ghar pohoch jaaungi), naina replied in an assuring voice.

"Theek hai fer jaldi aja..tere naal kuj jaruri gall karni hai" (Theek hai fir jaldi aja..tere saath kuch zaroori baat karni hai) Navoj said and quickly cut the call before Naina could reply or say anything.

After that call, Naina was continuously thinking about what her family was up to. She kept thinking about it until she reached her big beautiful banglow as they were possibly the richest family in Jalandhar.

She opened the big doors and as soon as she stepped in, she was warmly welcomed by her loving father. "Aa gya mera puttar..kive rhea tera din?" (Aa gya mera beta..kaisa rha tera din?) Gagandeep asked in a welcoming tone standing in the hall as if waiting for his daughter only. Everyone knows that Gagandeep always uses to call Naina as his 'puttar' (beta) and treats her like his son. It's not because he wanted a son, it's just his way of showing his fatherly love, and this is very common amongst the Punjabi families.

"Boht vadhiya Daddy" (Boht acha Daddy), Naina replied lovingly to her father.

"Puttar mai, teri mummy te teri biji ne tere naal jaruri gall karni si..tu hun jaake fresh hoja fer biji de kamre ch aa jaayi" (Beta mai, teri mummy aur teri biji ne tere saath zaroori baat karni thi..tu ab jaake fresh hoja phir biji ke kamre me aa jana), after saying this, Gagandeep left giggling while leaving a confused Naina.

(Note: Biji is a word in punjabi that usually refers to our grand mother either paternal or maternal)

Naina wasted no time while freshening up and went to her biji's room. Everyone seemed more happy than usual. She sighted in relief that she has not done anything wrong. She sat on the queen sized bed with her biji and her parents sat on the sofa beside the bed.

"Ni kudiye..hun tu apni vadi afsari hi karni ja veyahke aithon kise hor de ghar vi jaana e..vekh kudiye..teri hun veyan Vali umar ho gyi e..te ajj tere layi rishta aya e.." (Ae naina..ab tune apni naukri hi karni hai ya fir kisi ke ghar Shaadi karke bhi jaana hai..dekh naina..teri ab Shaadi ki umar ho gyi hai..aur ajj tere liye rishta bhi aya hai..) at first her biji was rude then she replaced her tone with a soft one after seeing the fuming anger in the eyes of her son Gagandeep. It's not that she doesn't love Naina.. it's just that she remains rude with everyone.. it's her basic nature of taunting and scholding everyone.
