Jaemin sipped carefully on his coffee, looking between his drink and his brother that was sitting in front of him at the small coffee shop he had taken him to.
He looked different than Jaemin remembered. What used to be a kid in old jeans and hoodies with plain brown hair and glasses was now a pink-haired biker who wore all black and, if Jaemin wasn't mistake, had a tattoo disappearing from his neck to who knows where.
He grimaced. "You look like you're going through your teenage emo phase at 20." Jaehyun scoffed.
"Well you're not in much better shape, are you?" He said with a smug look on his face, taking a sip of his own coffee. Jaemin scrunched his nose. There was nothing he could really say to that.
Not only had he just found his soulmate, Mark Lee nonetheless, but apparently his own soulmate, the person he was destined to be with, didn't want him.
Images of childhood fantasies flashed through his head of when he would first meet his soulmate if he had one. Being embraced in a tight hug and then kissed before they joined hands and traveled the world together as celebrities.
It all seemed to glamorous as a child and now he was left with a pit of despair. That he hadn't been good enough. That his soulmate immediately complained and rejected him. Jaemin didn't even wanted all of the fame or fortune now, it was all material and useless anyways.
"Jaems?"
He lifted his gaze up from his cooling coffee into his brother's worried eyes. "Yeah?"
"Who's this Mark guy to you? I don't like him," Jaehyun said and crossed his legs, leaning his head against one of his propped up arms. Jaemin sighed. He couldn't say anything out loud but he could say a little.
"He's some kid that goes to my school, I met him I think close to a month ago, he's...a little hard to understand and he doesn't have a great reputation but he's an okay guy." Jaemin explained as well as he could, his heart still sinking as he said the last part.
"Hmm, he works with that Yuta guy doesn't he?"
Jaemin's head snapped up, recognizing the name that his brother had mentioned and feeling slightly sick. Did the rumors spread so far that his brother who had just gotten to town know them? "How do you know about Yuta a-and it's not true! You should know that!"
"Huh? What's not true? I just saw the two of them before I came to your house. My motorbike had a little trouble," Jaehyun said cooly, raising his eyebrow in curiosity. "What's not true Jaemin?"
He sighed, knowing that he couldn't sneak anything past his brother. He never could, not even when they had been children. So Jaemin explained as quickly and quietly as he could about the rumors surrounding the boy and the mechanic, Jaehyun's face paling.
"That's not good."
"Yeah Jae, that's an understatement."
"Oh come on, you know what I mean," Jaehyun rolled his eyes and leaned on his forearms, fiddling with the almost empty mug in front of him, "It wouldn't be good for his business but, I think you were right to tell him to chill out for now. It might blow over as some silly rumor unless he does something stupid."
Jaemin nodded, tipping his head back as he finished the rest of his coffee, standing up impatiently and beckoning for Jaehyun to hurry and finish. His brother finished his coffee and the two walked out of the coffee shop.
They walked back to Jaemin's house, braving the freezing November wind. Walking into his house, Jaemin looked around and recalled the events of earlier. It seemed like it had been forever ago but it had only been an hour or two earlier.
The door closed and locked behind the two siblings and Jaehyun let out a loud groan. Jaemin gave him an annoyed look as the older sat onto his couch, his boots still on his feet.
"So are you finally going to tell me what's really going on between you and this Mark kid?" Jaehyun wiggled his eyebrows and Jaemin looked nervously at the door.
Better to be safe than sorry.
Jaemin began to walk around his small apartment, drawing the curtains closed and making sure that all of his windows were closed and locked. He then walked back into the living room where his brother was sporting a much more serious look.
He sat next to Jaehyun, worry coursing through his veins as he dared to speak the words out loud. "Jaehyun listen this can't leave this room okay?"
"Yeah Jaems, what's up?"
Jaemin could already see from the expression on Jaehyun's face that he suspected what he was about to say, but it still shocked the boy to the core as he spoke.
"He's my soulmate Jaehyun."
"He's your what?" His brother said in disbelief, his voice raising slightly and Jaemin had to shush him.
"My soulmate Jaehyun," Jaemin said, tears beginning to prick the back of his eyelids, "we both found out when you walked in earlier but he-he said he didn't want me." His voice cracked and suddenly he was pulled into a tight hug.
Before he knew it, he was crying into his brother's safe arms. It hurt so much. It hurt so much more than he had expected. After enduring all of that pain for close to three years, he just had the boy who caused him all that pain cause him more pain.
"Shh, it's okay Jaemin, he'll come around. And if he doesn't, you're too good for him," Jaehyun whispered softly and Jaemin nodded, moving back and wiping his running nose with his sleeve.
His brother was right. He just had to wait for Mark to come to his senses, or he would just have to forget he ever saw anything. That he didn't have a soulmate.
"Yeah, okay."
