Chapter 34 - So Long and Goodnight

MacKenzie's POV

"And... go." Cecile says, starting the timer for pictrionary. Barry begins drawing as we all watch

"Like a map of some kind?" Joe asks

"No." Barry answers

"That's a flux capacitor." Cisco says

"Hold... no." Barry answers

"They are not gonna get this." Iris mumbles

The buzzer goes off. "Okay, it was gonna be the Eiffel Tower." Barry defends his drawing

"Oh, damn." Joe says. "That looks just like the Eiffel Tower."

The others around the table begin to agree, trying to make Barry feel better about his bad drawing skills. Barry looks over at me and I give him a shrug

Joe's phone rings. "Oh, I got to take this." He says, answering. "Hey, David." We only hear one side the conversation as we set up for the next game of pictionary. "Okay, so let me take a crack at it. David, it's because I'm close that I can rattle her. Come on, there's nobody else that can do this." He says as Barry walks over to him. "Oh, okay." He says as the call is ended

"Was that the Carver case?" Barry asks

"Yeah." Joe responds

"How can I help?" Barry asks

"You just conserve your energy." Joe tells Barry. "I'll call you if I need anything. I got to go, guys." He tells us around the table. "Take care." He says as he leaves

Late at night, we're at a crime scene where Joe's car was wrecked. Barry has a tight grip on my hand as we walk through the area and over to Joe

"It was crazy." Joe tells the group of me, Barry, Iris, Cecile, and Singh around him. "It was like it was accelerating by itself. I mean, I know you won't believe this, but it was like somebody cut the brakes while I was driving. Is that even possible?" He asks Barry

"I-I don't know. I'll find out." Barry tells him

"Are you sure you're okay?" Singh asks

"I'm fine." Joe says. "It's Carver that needs to worry."

"You think Carver's the one behind this?" Cecile asks

"Well, he knows I took down one of his assassins, Millie Rawlins, AKA Sunshine." Joe says. "And he knows I'm the lead on the RICO case we're building against him."

"Well, if that's true, we have to get you in witness protection." Singh says. "You're just not safe out here, Joe."

"David, I'm not going anywhere." Joe says. "Look, if Carver is coming after me, that means he is scared. What do scared people do? They make mistakes. We need to take advantage of that."

"Fine. Fine." Singh gives in. "You have my complete support, Joe, as always. But if anything happens, I'll never forgive myself."

"I need to go talk to Rawlins." Joe says, getting up and leaving

"I mean, the only way somebody could accelerate the car and simultaneously cut the brakes is from inside the car's engine, which is... I mean, obviously no person could fit inside there." Barry explains to Iris and I as we stand in the speedlab going through the car parts as evidence

"Well, Ray Palmer could." Iris says. "Only he's not a murderous, sabotaging type."

"How about a meta-human who can squeeze into tight places?" Barry suggests. "Likes to watch his victims suffering up close."
