Chapter 37 - Pay the Piper

MacKenzie's POV

I help Barry into the room. Some of his weight is on me and his arm is around my shoulders. He's exhausted and weak from the glass battle and from emotion. The second we step into the dark room, a figure stands up

"Hands up! Don't move!" Joe orders, aiming his gun at the two figures in the shadows. Barry and I our hands up in surrender and Joe drops his gun. "You scared the bejesus out of me. Oh, my God. What happened?" He asks. Barry begins to move forwards and I walk with him, helping him. And then, he collapses in tears in Joe's arms

"It's Iris." Barry breathes

We're sitting on the bed in the hotel room after Barry told Joe what was going on. "Wally warned me that something was off with Iris. And then Sunshine attacked Frost. I noticed that she was being weird with you, cold even. I just didn't say anything."

"It's not your fault." Barry whispers

"Well, it feels like it." Joe says. "Well, where are the other duplicates now?"

"Iris' copy is gone. She... It... shattered into a million pieces right in front of me." Barry says. "I know it wasn't her, but right before it happened, she seemed so... alive. Almost like she was really back. I'm trying to have hope that it's all gonna work out, but I can't help feeling...Joe, what if I can't save her this time?"

"And I believe that you can... but do you?" Joe asks him

Barry and I are sitting across from the group of Nash, Ralph, Cecile, Cisco, and Allegra in the lounge

"They're just gone?" Nash asks

"What does that even mean...Mirrorverse?" Allegra ask. "Can we even get them back?"

"Oh, my God." Cecile whispers. "We... we have to warn David's husband."

"I've been living with some copy of Kamilla while the real one's trapped somewhere?" Cisco questions

"Eva said they're safe for now." Barry says

"And you're taking her word for it?" Cisco asks. "For all we know, they're dead already." He says and my heart stops at the possibility

"They're not, so just... you don't even think about that." Ralph says

"We have to think about that." Cisco says. "What if creating Kamilla's duplicate actually killed the real Kamilla? Same thing with Singh, same thing with Iris." He looks at Barry who is silent. "Hello?"

"What do you want me to say?" Barry asks

"Anything!" Cisco exclaims. "That we have a plan, that we'll get them back."

"I don't have a plan, Cisco." Barry says. "Eva can move anywhere through any mirror in the universe in the blink of an eye. She's faster than I am, and somehow, I'm supposed to stop her and still hope to God that Iris and everybody else is still alive in a world that we don't even understand?" He yells, banging his hand on the table. I look down at his fist next to me that he had banged on the table and his watch is red

"Hey, hey!" Cecile exclaims, cutting them off. "You're both right, okay? You're both right. But we cannot fall apart. We need to work the problem, not tear each other down. So here's what I'm gonna do... I am gonna call David's husband, and I am gonna see if he has seen Singh's duplicate."

"I'll check the Bentley Building." Allegra says. "Mirror-Iris and Kamilla were alone there a lot. Maybe they left something behind."

"Good." Nash says. "You want company?"

"Maybe you should find something else to do." Allegra tells him and then she walks out

"You can come with me." Ralph tells Nash. "I'm gonna see if I can dig up any details on this Eva McCulloch." He says and he and Nash leave the room
