Equius wasn't immediately tranported to a dream bubble. Void players often remain lost and confused after death. His afterlife began deep in the furthest ring where he was plauged by images of Gamzee killing Nepeta.
He'd almost lost his mind by the time Nepeta found him. She took his hand and told him that things will be alright, that she's okay now. She guided him back to a dream bubble and they never left each other's side after that.
