she shoots up into a seated position when she hears a knock on her door. thinking it's jane coming back to apologize, she exclaims, "about time," while opening the door, only to be faced with none other than ricky.
she's still in her dress but her makeup was gone. her curls were beginning to fall and she wasn't wearing jewelry anymore, but ricky still found himself staring at her in awe.
"not this again," nini scoffs, rolling her eyes and opening the door further to let him in, "what are you doing here?"
"um, uh, i wanted to see if you were ok, with jane and everything. i uh saw her leave your room. she looked upset," nini sat down at her desk, carefully processing his words.
"oh," she starts, unsure what to say, "yeah everything's fine, i think. we just got in a small argument."
ricky looks at her, trying to pick up on what she's thinking.
"i have an idea," she says. ricky met her eyes and gave her a confused look, prompting her to continue, "be my boyfriend," she says, rather nonchalantly, catching ricky off guard.
ricky's breath falters, causing him to cough. "nini what?" he asks, surprised by her suggestion.
"fake boyfriend. i meant fake boyfriend," she covers, "then my moms will stop asking me about it every time they see me."
he thinks about it, already knowing his answer, still staring at her in disbelief.
"no. nini no!" he yells, shocked that she'd even suggest something like this. "nini we haven't seen each other since high school. we haven't talked in years, there's no way we can pull this off. your moms aren't going to believe we all of a sudden decided to date after years of no contact."
"my moms don't know we stopped talking," she says quietly, scared of his reaction.
"what?" he asks, "nini.." he trails off.
she sighs and breathes in, bringing a hand up to rub her temple, "i haven't told them anything, they think we're still friends."
ricky looks at her with an angry expression, "no. no, it's not happening i'm sorry," he stands up and leaves her room.
nini's left behind with tears in her eyes from the confrontation, she takes a shaky breath and updates her friends on the situation.
