Somewhere in Mount Olympus

Three figures sat in their designated spots, their hands never stopping as they caressed the threads gently. One was humming lightly as her fingers strummed the loom gently, spinning the threads of life. One was occasionally lifting the threads up and measuring them before placing them back down into the loom. One was snipping away at the broken threads, ending the life of a mortal on earth.

All three were a part of a greater system, a system that determined when a mortal was born, what a mortal would go through and when a mortal leaves the world.

Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos; sisters or better known as The Fates. They were all part of the body which determined the destinies of the mortals and Gods, having spent years slaving over the grand tapestry of life, balancing the thin thread between life and death.

Threads of different colours flowed between the three. The red brilliant like the blood of angry men. The blue a perfect hue between the light and the dark. The green vibrant like the summer leaves in a tropical island. The yellow, bright and pure like the golden feathers of a canary. There were all sorts of colours; pink, violet, orange, brown and that was the beauty of the threads of life.

Each life was made out of different colours, be it the mortals or the Gods. The only difference between the threads of the mortals and the deities were the strange glow that often shone when The Fates touched the threads of the immortals.

Snap!

"That's another one, sisters." Atropos sighed softly as she cut away another thread that broke from the loom.

"Another early death," Clotho said dismissively.

It was better not to mix emotions into their duties. That was only a road for disaster.

Silence

"Zeus and Hera seem to be doing well. Their threads have never been entwined as tightly as the present." Lachesis observed.

"Thank the deities. Looks like we won't have to deal with Zeus' wrath for some time." Atropos snickered.

"Perhaps..." Clotho hummed lightly as she handed another thread; another life to her sister.

Lachesis took the thread, measured it and weaved it into the grand tapestry of life, her fingers grazing over two particular threads that caused her to stop.
