Patrol

It was around 5 in the morning when someone knocked on the door. It was Maria.

"Oh, hey Maria."
"Logan? What're you doing here?"
"I stayed with Joel, after last night."
"Okay, well... Can you do me a favor and go patrolling in 10 minutes with Joel and Tommy? We got reports of infected, so I wanna send the best guys i know."
"Yeah sure, but i've never patrolled before."
"It's okay, just follow their lead, thank you. Oh and just meet Tommy at the stables."
"Yeah." I closed the door, getting into a hoodie, jacket, some jeans and my boots.
I went upstairs to tell Joel, and he got ready.

We went out and jogged to the stables.

As I made it to the stables, I saw Tommy with their horses.

"G'morning, kiddo" Tommy said to me as I walked up to him.
"Morning." I said back.
It was silent for a second.
"So, where are the infected?" Joel stopped the silence.
"By the ski lifts." Tommy answered.
"Oh alright."

I got on Joel's horse and we rode off.

ELLIE'S POV

I woke up to knocking on my door. It was Jesse.
"Oh shit hey, I was just about to get up."
"Heard you had quite a night after I left?" Jesse was talking about last nights party.
"She kissed me. It was Dina being Dina, she didn't mean anything by it."
"I'm talking about your fight with Seth, wait, you kissed Dina?"
"Oh, I-"
"We break up and you make a move on my girl?"
"What? No... no she was drunk- she was probably just trying to make you jealous- i would never- oh fuck this is awkward." My hands began to sweat.
"I'm messing with you man, I don't care, get dressed."
"You're the worst." I slammed the door but Jesse caught it.
"It's kinda fucked up you did that." He said with a smirk as I closed the door.
"Hey do you know if Joel's up?"
"Maria sent him, Logan and Tommy to patrol early."
"Logan?"
"Yeah, said he was staying at Joel's place for the night, so she sent him for practice."
"Oh."
I was grabbing my stuff and I put on my boots.
I opened the door and Jesse started talking to me about Maria needing me in the diner, but all i could think about was Logan, and how he stayed with Joel instead of coming home. Maybe i was too harsh?

Jesse and I were walking to the stables, and so was Maria.
"Hey Ellie, can I talk to you for a sec?"
"Yeah whats up?" I walked up to Maria.
"I don't know what's going on with you and Joel, and Logan but-"
"Maria." I put my fingers up to my eyes.
"They really care about you."
"We're fine." I lied, about Joel at least.
"Okay, okay. Sorry to pry. Be safe out there."
"Thanks."

I saw Dina playing with the kids at the playground.

"Will you get your girlfriend to the stables please?" Jesse said with a smirk on his face.
"Oh jesus... Dina!"
"Just a second!"
I couldn't stop thinking about Logan.
I heard Dina walk up to me.
"Hey."
"Hey, Jesse wants us to do the creek trails."
"He always wants me to do the creek trails."
"Yeah.." I looked down at my hands to avoid eye contact.
"I'm sorry." I looked up at Dina as she said that.
"For what?"
"Well for kissing you in front of all those people, i-"
"You were drunk it's fine."
"Yeah I know i just-"
"I'm not reading into it or anything."
"You know what I love about you? How you let me finish my sentences."
"Okay... we should get going."

Then Dina hopped the fence and we walked to the stables, getting our horses and getting ready for patrols.

Jesse gave his pep talk as usual, and we rode off towards the creek trails.

LOGAN'S POV

It had been a few hours.
We were all running because of a massive horse of infected chasing us, but Joel saw this blond girl with a braid and helped her.

"What's your name?!" Joel asked the girl.
"Ab-Abby."
"Alright Abby, I'm Joel, that's Tommy, and that's Logan."
She looked shocked and couldn't keep her eyes off Joel but we then got distracted by the infected.

After we were able to make it to the horses, Abby told us about the place her and her friends are staying at.

ELLIE'S POV

There was a blizzard after we cleared out a supermarket.

We had gone to what was Eugene's old hideout, and his secret weed garden under it. We found a jar of blunts and I tried to open it.

"You having a hard time?" Dina said to me as she was taking her jacket off.
"No its- fuck."
"Gimme that." Dina grabbed it from me.
"Like you're gonna get it."
"Ugh, fuck it." She threw it and it smashed all over the ground.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" I had put my hands up a little.
"Well i got it open didn't I?"
"Yeah." I grabbed a blunt from the ground and Dina lit it.
"Well we're gonna be stuck here for a while right?"
"Totally trapped." I twirled my fingers as I thought of Logan again.
Dina handed the blunt to me and I took a puff.
"How would you rate our kiss from last night?"
"Why are we still talking about this?"
"Well, all I asked was to rate our kiss? Id give it a six."
"Wow, a six?"
"Yeah, there were a lot of people around."
"Sure, but a six?"
"Oh what? Now I really wanna know how you'd rate it."
"I don't think you do."
"You're infuriating. You make me want to go back into that blizzard."
"No ones stopping you."
"This better be better than a six."

We got closer and our lips touched, getting more intimate as I pushed her back onto the couch.

We were talking about our scars as we heard a pair footsteps coming down to us.
"Ellie? Dina?"
"Jesse?" Dina asked.
"Jesse just stay there please!"
Jesse came down as we put on our clothes.
"Are you kidding me." Jesse turned around.
"What're you doing here?" Dina asked Jesse.
"What we do matters."
"There's a blizzard outside!"
"Is that weed?"
"What are you doing here?" Dina grew impatient with Jesse.
"Because Joel, Tommy and Logan didn't show up!"
My eyes widened as my heart sank.
"What do you mean?"
"I waited for an hour, so I went to check for their horses but then I saw lights."
"Maybe they just went back to town?" Dina tried to calm me down.
"Without being replaced, no way."
I put my jacket and bag on.
"How much of their region have you covered?
"Not much."
"Okay then we go at it from different sides." I started to get anxious.
"I don't like you riding solo."
"What other choice do we have?"
"Alright, I'll head east, you head north and Dina'll go west, yeah? Be smart about it."

I started to quickly walk towards the exit and get on my horse.

LOGAN'S POV

We arrived at the house where Abby was staying at. We walked to the basement and you could feel the tensions rising, so i put my butterfly knife in my hand, hiding it with my sleeve.

A girl shook hands with Tommy.
"I'm Mel, what's your name?"
"My names Tommy, this is Logan, and that's my brother Joel."
Everyone get on edge and stared at Joel.
"Y'all act you heard of us or something." Joel said as Abby had a shotgun in her hand.
"It's cause we have."
Abby shot Joel's leg with a shotgun leaving him on the ground.
"NOOO!!" Tommy screamed as he got knocked out.
"Motherfucker!" I tried to go after Abby but then got shot in the leg, throwing me to the floor.
"Leave him alone!" I shouted to Abby but she smacked my back, stomach and legs with the golf club.

She turned back to Joel.

"Joel Miller."
"Who are you?"
"Guess."
"Just say whatever speech you got and get this over with."
"You stupid old man, you don't get to rush this." She smacked Joel in the head with the golf club as I screamed his name, but got my face kicked in, Knocking me out cold.
