EVER SINCE ANNABELLE TURNED THIRTEEN, there hadn't been a single Friday night in which she wasn't out and about with friends—usually doing something their parents wouldn't permit, but hey, at least she was making memories, right? Because that's what being a teenager is all about. The age of adolescence only lasted a short seven years, and she was determined to make the best of them so that she'd have stories to tell her children in the future. Although to be one hundred percent honest, all her current stories involved underage drinking and blacking out. There wasn't anything else she ever did, really.
Being a kook and all definitely had disadvantages—nothing too serious—but they existed. For starters, the teenagers on Figure Eight could never, ever get caught doing something that would ruin the reputation their parents had built for their families. Messing up in the public eye had never been an option for them and it never would be. One simple mistake was all it took to destroy everything.
This was why most of the older folks who were stuck raising teenagers on the island were forced to create a strong connection with all of the officers down at the sheriff's station. That way, any mess that their children got into could and would be erased as if it never happened.
Now, back to the formation of a particular group of kooks.
When Annabelle was about six years old, she met Janet Wilson after accidentally pushing the girl down the slide. It had driven the two girls to hate each other at the start, but after a while, the two toddlers got over it and were now the closest friends in existence. Then there was Genevieve Atkins: she had come to the Outer Banks for a family vacation when she was eleven years old, but her parents ended up liking the island so much that they decided to purchase a home in Figure Eight—the one right across the street from the Monroe's to be more specific. Annabelle and Janet were the first to befriend the eleven-year-old and the rest was history. For the following three and a half years, they were a trio...that is until they began high school. There, they met Nate Williams and Dean Kingston, some of the biggest kooks on Kildare Island. It wasn't a friendship that formed immediately, but in the end, they'd managed to put any of their differences aside and became a group of five.
