a few nights ago
i was lying awake
staring at the stars
in my mind
when i realized
i don't want to be inside
so i checked the clock
two am
perfect
i tiptoed through the kitchen
past my slumbering family
pried open the door
and bounded out into the windless night
absorbed the rain falling from the sky
breathed in the mist that threatened to surround me
let my toes sink into the water puddles
kick them around
splash at the wall
jumping like a kid in the dead of night
ruining my clothes
the motion sensor lights framed my shadow
up against the wooden wrapping of my house
and i'm surprised no one awoke
maybe i'll be eternally grateful they didn't
for that would have been a little hard to explain
but even so
i went back to bed
with my feet still wet
