Newt had just sat down with the group and Vince was preparing for his speech, "Hey Newt!" Frypan said with a smile, "What ya got there?" he said looking at the necklace. Newt looked down at it, "A story for another time.." he said looking down at his hands. The boy couldn't feel very much at this point, all of his emotions had already been let out. There was no point in even trying to pretend like he was okay, he wasn't. And everyone knew he wasn't, all of them had lost so much. Thomas lost two of the people he loved, Newt lost the one person he cared about most in this world. And overall everyone just lost two of their friends, well one of their friends for most of them.
"Can I have your attention!" Vince said over the loud chatter around the Haven, he cleared his throat as everyone started quieting down. "Thank you.." he said looking around. Newt had sat on his own for hours, the sun had practically set. The sky was a painting of purples, pinks and oranges. "So.. today, is a day of great loss. We've lost some of our closest, some of our strongest. Along this journey, these innocent lives that have been sacrificed.. if it weren't for them then most of us wouldn't be where we are today." The Gladers thought back to their time in the Glade, when Y/n would constantly boss them about. Telling them to hurry up or to get on with it, Newt thought about the kindness she showed him and how she helped him out of such a dark time.
"If it weren't for them, then this place.. it wouldn't be possible. We.. we can't let their sacrifices go to waste. This place, it may be for us. But this," Vince said, pointing at a tall rock, "This is for them. Some time over the next few days, in your own special way.. come and make their mark. We have to honour them." he said, there was a slight pause, "I know they would all want us to be happy and to live our lives. So we will. Welcome to the Safe Haven!" he shouted, cheers and whoops spread across the entire beach. People cheering and the klinks of glasses hitting off eachother could be heard all around, the Gladers shared a compassionate look before joining in to clap with everyone.
It had been a few hours and multiple people had engraved their friends names into the large stone. Frypan wrote Winston, Thomas wrote Teresa, Minho wrote Ben, Gally wrote Alby and so on. Clint, Jeff, Zart and all of the other Gladers they had lost whether it was to Grievers or The Flare were engraved too. Then, Newt stepped up. Mostly everyone else had gone to bed except for the Gladers, Jorge and Brenda. It took about five minutes, but Newt carved the girls' name into the wall. Right below the rest of the names of the lost Gladers, he on purposely put her name slightly bigger for the effect. He also added a small sun at the end of her name, no one else understood but he did. He always would.
They all gave the rock one last look before heading over to bed, most of them just looked up at the stars. The adrenaline that had pumped through them just the night before had made them all very energetic, not very many of them were tired. There were snores that could be heard for miles coming out of random people across the sleeping grounds. Newt got up quietly, everyone could see but he didn't want to wake anyone else who was already asleep. He walked back down to the sea front, his hands had now been cleaned and weren't covered in black, gooey blood. He sat down and looked out into the black abyss, where the ocean was at least you just couldn't see it. He sat there for a few minutes before hearing footsteps, he turned around to see Minho walking towards him.
"What ya doing over here, shank?" Minho asked with a slight laugh, sitting down beside the blonde boy. "Just trying to clear my head." Newt replied, looking back out to the void of darkness. "Yeah? Well you've been doing the same thing for the past six hours.. I'm sorry man." Minho replied, patting the boys' shoulder, he had knelt down beside him. "If you need someone to talk to.. we're all here, you know that?" Minho said seriously, the blonde boy continued looking out to the sea and nodded. The dark haired boy let out a small sigh, patted the boys' back once more then stood up and walked away.
