"Okay," I exclaim, shoving the last necessity into the drawer of the mini-dresser consisting of extra clothes, a hairbrush, and a few other self-care products. "All done!"

I look around the loft—Derek's loft—with a grin. The sliding entrance door comes into a giant living area, which currently, isn't very well furnished. Save for a large, soft-cushioned couch and a coffee table, the area is rather empty, but I can't say I'd pegged Derek as much of an interior designer. To the left is a complete kitchen, which has exactly two of everything. Then in the back of the room is a tight spiral staircase which opens up into the sleeping area, with a large plush king-sized bed sitting under a large wall of windows, complete with a plain white sheet and comforter set. On one side is a nightstand and on the other—on my side—is the little dresser Derek surprised me with yesterday. "For some of your things," he said nonchalantly, "for when you stay over and stuff."

A little sweaty from all the moving around, Derek wanders up to me with a smirk, pulling me into him. "So, what do you think?" he asks, the two of us eyeing the place.

The loft on its own isn't very homey, thanks to the lack of decorations and the cement flooring, but the more I'm here, the more giddy I become with excitement. Derek finally has a place: a reliable home, meaning he's planning on sticking around for quite awhile . . . Also meaning we finally have a space to be completely alone that isn't an old charred house or a musty abandoned train station.

"I think it's perfect," I decide after a few seconds, letting out a soft sigh. "Now my mom can lay off our asses."

It's been about three weeks since everything went down with Gerard and the kanima, and since then, things have been, well. . . Boring, I guess. But peaceful. It'd been so long since we could all just relax and not have to worry about saving ourselves or the town. We finished out our sophomore year of school (Scott, thankfully, finishing with us), able to take our exams with only the stress of the schoolwork clogging our brains. Now, school is out, and we have three long months to recover from the rather insane school year.

However, during these three weeks, we finally had that talk with our mom. Like, fully. We told her just about everything, down to every last detail and secret we kept from her. Even about me—which at first she didn't believe, since I don't exactly sprout side burns or have glowing eyes, but after a little scar showcase and an arm wrestle with Scott, she gave in on the idea. We had even told her about Allison and her family, although her and Scott did finally decide to officially split. She hasn't tried to come after Derek again—I think she realized just how manipulated she was by her grandfather, and that humbled her—although Scott refuses to tell her the reason why Derek did what he did. She still has no idea that her mother was trying to murder Scott that night, and that's why she was bitten.
