The next day at school, Jackson prances through the hallways rather smugly, purposely getting close to Scott and Stiles—daring them not to move away and risk getting into any more trouble. He's enjoying this so much. Little does he know we're actually trying to save his ass.

Allison warned us this morning that Gerard has installed a new security system—cameras in nearly every hallway and classroom. He can watch us at all times. It doesn't take long for us to find a way around it, however. Or rather, for Scott to so he can see his girlfriend. During free period I find myself between the two boys (who really, aren't supposed to be around each other at the moment), hiding in the library between two tall wooden shelves.

Scott pushes a stack of books to the side so that we can see through the shelf to the other side. Moments later, Allison appears, slyly slipping her tablet through the gap and handing it over to us. My brother finds the power button and turns it on, a screen popping up with Lydia's translations. That girl knows so much—I don't know how I didn't think to ask her if she knew enough archaic latin to translate the bestiary for us. I'm not sure what Allison said to explain why we needed this translation so badly, but either way, we have more answers now. The first big difference between what Lydia was able to translate and what we had previously thought: the kanima does not seek a friend. It seeks a master—meaning, even though he's an asshole, Jackson is doing someone else's bidding. He's innocent.

"Does it say how to find out who's controlling him?" I ask, watching as my brother zooms in on different areas of the translations.

"Not really," Allison says. "But we were right about the murderers. It calls the kanima a weapon of vengeance. There's a story in there about a South American priest who uses the kanima to execute murderers in his village."

"Alright, see? So maybe it's not all that bad," Stiles offers with a nod, but Allison's expression turns dark.

"Until the bond grew strong enough that it killed whoever he wanted it to," she responds bluntly, reaching up and taking a book off of the shelf casually, flipping it open.

"All bad. All very, very bad."

"Here's the thing though. The kanima's actually supposed to be a werewolf but it can't be. . ." A woman returning a book to Allison's shelf distracts her, but Scott finds the exact sentence in the translation and finishes for her.

"'Until it resolves that in its past which manifested it.'"

The quote brings me back to a conversation I had with Derek in the time I was fighting the infection from the bite. So many thoughts were going through my mind, and at this point I wasn't yet convinced that I wasn't going to heal and turn into a werewolf, and I asked him about his uncle. How he managed to turn into such a monstrous, animalistic alpha. Half because I was worried about myself and Scott, and half because Derek had just been graced with red eyes, and I was really worried for him. His answer was nonchalant: "Sometimes the shape you take reflects the type of person you are." Jackson turned into a kanima because of whatever unresolved psychological issues he has going on inside that head.
