I remember it like it was yesterday. It keeps coming back, haunting my dreams and haunting every step I take. I try to forget about it, but I haven't been the same since.
I walked around the Island, keeping an eye out for anybody that might need help with their morning chores. I had just finished helping one of my little sisters with raking the front of her cabin. It was October, and it was getting closer and closer to the spooky time of the year. We had just finished putting the last few leaves into the garbage bags and had sealed them when I heard someone call out my name.
"Dusk!" They called out. I didn't recognize who it was at first, but as the person repeated my name, I realized it was one of the Hargreeves siblings, Diego. We had a rocky friendship since we broke up, and I started dating Quigley and Klaus. But for once, he didn't seem to start anything with me. I asked him if he needed something, and he pointed out there was a stone staircase, leading into the ground deep in the forest.
"It seems like an underground passage or house," he finished explaining, leaving me confused. I had never seen nor heard of a stone staircase leading into the ground. I looked at my sister, then back at Diego, telling him that I would check it out. "You want me to come with you? Watch your back?" My little sister, Maisie, asked as I started to walk away. "I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. I'll be fine," I answered.
The small twigs and branches crunched underneath my feet as I walked through the forest. I'll admit, I've never like forests that much. But during October, I felt chills run down my spine, the air suddenly became cold, and ominous gray fog had started to form. I picked up the pace, telling myself to just get a glance and then get back to camp. The fog had become thicker with every passing second, but somehow, I managed to find the staircase Diego was talking about.
I got down on my hands and knees, trying to peer at what lay below. "Hello? Anyone there?" I called out, my voice echoing down the steps. No reply. I was curious but also terrified as the cold air became more intense, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand at attention. I called out once more, but all I heard was the echo of my voice. I slowly stood up, walking down the staircase, determined to find out what was down there.
At the end of the staircase, there was a wooden door, four small slits of glass rested at the top, allowing some light to enter whatever was behind it. A simple silver doorknob rested on the right side, waiting for me to turn it and finally solve this mystery. I carefully opened it, instantly smelling the awful odor of decomposition. It was so dark, and aside from the morning light, I couldn't see anything. I then saw a box of matches resting on the wooden table. Thinking it was my only source of light, I grabbed it, pulled out a match and lit it, carefully waving it around to see what was down there with me.
I slowly walked around, jumping at the sound of mice scurrying around the place. I took another step forward, feeling my foot slip on something and causing me to fall and land on my back. My head began throbbing as I felt the back of it hit the concrete floor. Feeling hazy, I looked down at my hands, shocked to see that there was blood on them. My heartbeat quickened as I looked around, stunned to see that the area was completely covered in blood.
I lit another match, seeing a machete, chainsaw, and a bloody axe resting on wooden pegs that were attached to the wall. A few silver buckets rested against a corner, appearing to contain more of the dark red blood. "What the fuck is this place?" I muttered to myself, my gut telling me that I needed to get out of there before I potentially became the next victim. I ran towards the door, seeing that it had been closed, most likely by a giant gush of wind. As I was about to open it and run for my life, I heard footsteps coming down the stairs.
Without hesitation, I backed away, hearing someone mutter under their breath as they reached the door. I quickly hid underneath the wooden table, hoping that whoever this person was wouldn't notice my presence. As they walked past me, I held my breath, and I couldn't help but notice their shoes appeared to be black flats. Whoever they were, they were dragging a large garbage bag behind them. The smell of decomp hit me again, and I tried so hard to suppress the urge to vomit.
I could hear my heartbeat in my ears, wondering what the hell I had just gotten myself into. Maybe I shouldn't have come alone, maybe I should've had Diego come with me. Will I make it to see tomorrow? Will I die? They finished moving the bag across the room and began unzipping it. About halfway, the sounds of the unzipping stopped. Their head snapped back, looking in my direction. They had found me, and I had no idea what they were going to do. "Who's there?" a male voice asked as he walked towards the table. "I-It's D-Du-Dusk!" I stuttered. "Dusk Stone?" He inquired.
"Y-yes," I nodded. He stepped back, allowing me to crawl out, and when I met his face in the dimly lit room, I was stunned to see that it was one of my sister's boyfriend's, Five Hargreeves. I wouldn't consider us friends, more like acquaintances, since I was dating his brother, Klaus. His face was covered in blood, strands of his jet black hair were also covered in it, and he held another bloody axe in his right hand. I kept glancing at him and the axe, worried he was going to chop me in half at any moment.
"Why are you here?" He asked. Why is he asking these questions? Shouldn't he be putting the blade through my chest? I had seen so many horror movies, and the killer never gave the victim the chance to talk, he just killed them. But, this was different. It was someone I knew, someone I spoke to on occasion. "S-someone sent me out here. They found the staircase and asked me to go check it out," I explained, making Five raise an eyebrow. "And who told you to come here?" He asked.
I told him I didn't feel comfortable answering that question, fearing he would do something to Diego if I told him the truth. Five let out a small scoff, setting down the axe, and walked over to the half-open bag. "Y-your not gonna kill me?" I asked, both in shock and relief. He glanced at me with irritation, slowly shaking his head before continuing to unzip the bag. Somehow, I knew that it was a dead body, and I wasn't going to stick around to find out who it was. I slowly backed away and made my way towards the door, looking over my shoulder, making sure he wasn't lying about not killing me.
As I wrapped my hand around the knob, Five said something eerily that I will never forget.
"Don't tell Maisie about this place,"
A couple of months went by, and he seemed to be acting like his normal self, wrapping an arm around my sister with her other boyfriend, Nicky, on her other side. It took me a while to work up the courage to talk to him again and ask him if he was doing okay. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?" would be his answer. I don't know if he had a psychopathic episode and didn't remember anything or if he was pretending to act normal in front of the others.
Whatever the case is, I don't want to know.
