The waiting

Fred woke up in a good mood that morning, feeling happier. Diana must have had some part to play in it probably. He had taken his letter to the post office last night, and he hoped to receive one soon. But he knew, having seen Gilbert wait weeks for answers, that it wasn't going to come soon. He'd also written to his father, telling him he'd be home at Christmas, he wanted to tell him about Diana, and he hoped his father would be a little proud of him for studying medicine and getting excellent grades, it must be said that being next door to Gilbert helped a lot in that respect, he worked a lot with him and his grades had improved a lot since he'd made Blythe his best friend. He also now understood the difficulty his friend had in concentrating on his studies when Anne came to mind. Yet he had only known Diana for a few days! But he already felt like the happiest man in the world.

Gilbert got up happy too, he had finally been able to see Anne again, and seeing that Fred had found love with Diana made him even happier. He could hardly think of anything that could have made him happier at that moment. He stood up from his desk and glanced at his bedside table, smiling as he saw the white shell he had found in the rubble of Anne's cabin, and next to it, the small green velvet bag that contained his mother's ring. He knew what would one day make him even happier. Anne would be seventeen in March, and she would graduate from Queens in June, what would she do next? Would she come to Toronto to teach while he finished medical school? Or would she prefer to stay near Avonlea, Matthew and Marilla were getting older, she would surely want to stay close to Green Gables, he largely understood that choice. Or would she want to go to university to continue her studies? He didn't know. But one thing was certain, he wanted to live his life with her, and no matter how long it took for them to be reunited, he wanted to propose to her, once Queens was over. So this summer. A wave of heat filled his heart at the thought.

In Charlottetown, Anne and Diana were still happy about their weekend, but the euphoria was starting to subside. Diana had been floating on cloud nine since meeting Fred, and was just waiting for a letter. She had often gently laughed at Ann at the beginning of the school year, when she had just found out that Gilbert was here. But she understood now, and was only waiting for the Christmas break, when she hoped to see Fred again.

Anne was happy too, and now smiled every day when she saw Diana looking to see if she had any mail with even more fervour than she had herself. Her classes were going well, and she was beginning to think about what she was going to do next, June, the month she finished her studies, was approaching. She had many ideas in mind, but each one had a point that bothered her. She could not be with Gilbert and Marilla and Matthew at the same time. She would have to make a choice. And she wanted to make that choice by discussing it, with Gilbert of course, and with Marilla and Matthew, she knew that Matthew's health was not so good, and she didn't want to be too far away, and she also knew that if by some misfortune Matthew were to die, she wouldn't want to leave Marilla alone. But at the same time, living another two years away from Gilbert would certainly be a long time. She would have to wait until Christmas to find out what she wanted to do.

Ann had also managed to persuade Roy to see Cole again, which he had done, and she loved hearing Roy talk about their museum visits, walks and tea parties. And she knew that Cole was very fond of Roy, something she was certainly glad about.

It had been two weeks since they had resumed classes at the university. And that afternoon Diana ran to her room, despite Miss Blackmore's comments. She arrived in front of Anne, who was writing, smiling.

"Anne! I've had a letter!

- Oh, it's from Toronto?" asked Anne, getting up.

- J.. I didn't look, I never get a letter, it must be from Toronto, right?

- Yes, of course," Anne's tone of voice had dropped. Diana, this letter is from Avonlea.

- Oh... it must be my parents... But I saw them a fortnight ago, so it must not be to check up on me...

- Open it, you'll see," added Ann calmly.

- Yes, you're right.

"Diana,

I hope you're well, that your classes in Queens are going well and that you're happy with the choice you've made. I wanted to tell you that your father and I were delighted to host last weekend.

However, I wanted to share with you some things I heard last week, that some people saw you walking alone with a young man on the path around the pond, and that they saw him holding your hand. Is this true? Who is this young man? I thought I had raised you better than this, Diana, and taught you the things that are inappropriate in the presence of a boy, and especially alone!

Let this event be the only one we hear of, or I shall be obliged to send you to Paris, so this college is a bad influence on you.

I kiss you,

Your mother."

Diana raised her head, livid.

"Anne, I think I have a problem."
