A few weeks later

Michael

Charlotte looks at her feet ashamed.

"Mother, I really love her.", I say.

"Michael, she is your cousin. From your blood.", she says.

"But-", I start.

"Go to your room now. I don't wanna talk.", she says.

I go to my bedroom and cry.

"Aunt Katie, why are you so mad?", I hear Charlotte asking.

"If you two get in a relationship and then have children, the child will have the exact same family, Charlotte. Your child might get bullied at school because his father and mother are cousins.", Mother says.

"Our family is huge, Katie and my parents are cousins and I never got bullied. Just give us a chance. I promise you everything will work out.", Charlotte says.

"Did Michael touch you?", Mother asks.

"No. We wanted to let you know first.", Charlotte says.

I hear my mother sighing.

"Go get some sleep. We'll talk about it tomorrow.", Mother says.

"Goodnight.", Charlotte says in a sad voice.

"Goodnight, Char.", Mother says.

I peek through the keyhole and see Charlotte looking around her. I guess she's making sure nobody's watching her. She knocks lightly on my door. I open and she gets in quickly.

"Michael, you know I love you. Don't you?", she cries.

I hold her in my arms and kiss her head.

"Of course, honey. I love you more.", I say and stroke through her hair.

She keeps crying in my chest.

"Have some sleep now.", I say and kiss her sweetly.

"Okay, goodnight, baby.", she says and kisses my cheek.

"Goodnight, love.", I say.

She leaves the room and goes to Janet's room. She always sleeps there when she's here. I lay on my bed and try to fall asleep.
