Chapter Eight

"No~o~o~o~o!" Frodo screamed
"Ah." Cody cried. She looked down at her stomach and grabbed a hold of the hilt. Gently, she pulled on the black blade and dropped it on the ground with a metallic clatter. Unbearable pain coursed through her body and made its way up to her head. Her hands shook and her eyes began to roll into the back of her head when she began to topple over. Just before she hit the ground, Frodo rushed over to her and gingerly caught her.
Tears streamed down his face and dropped onto her deathly pale one. He sunk down to his knees and placed her head on his lap. Her eyes stared blankly up at the ceiling but seemed to be searching for something.
"Fr- Fr-" she couldn't form the word in her mouth and began to stutter.
"I'm here my love." he whispered.
A small smile appeared on her face despite the pain that flowed through her body.
"I said I would protect you. I- I said, I said I wouldn't let anything bad happen to you." he said in a very small voice. The tears ran faster down his face as more appeared in his eyes. Cody's breathing became ragged and she gasped for air.
"Sing?" she whimpered.
"Anything for my love." he sniffed.
♪ "Hush now my baby,
Be still, love, don't cry,
Sleep like you're rocked by the stream,
Sleep and remember this river lullaby
And I'll be with you when you dream." ♪
On the last word Frodo's body was racked with sobs as her eyelids fluttered shut and she let out a small sigh.
"Noooo..." he sobbed. He kissed her lips as if he could breathe the breathe of Life into her. He rested his forehead on hers and cried like he had never cried before. When the sadness had taken its toll on him, anger began to be pumped into his veins. All he saw was red and a scowl was on his face when he looked up.
He gently placed her head on the ground and started screaming like a mad man. He grabbed his sword and began to swing it around the cave. "Noooo!" he yelled. He pulled the Ring off and stared at the golden band. Such a harmless object and yet it had the power to determine people's fates.
With out him realising it, his hand slowly inched its way to the Ring of Power. Before his forefinger slipped through the circle a driving force knocked him on his side and pinned him to the ground.
"Mr. Frodo don't." Sam said.
"Samwise Gamgee, get off of me!" Frodo growled.
"Not until you put the Ring away. Cody didn't die for nothin'."
The anger left his face and a new wave of sadness washed over him. His bottom lip quivered and the tears rolled down his face again. He stumbled over to her side and collapsed into a heap on the floor. He heard Sam walk over to them but he did not have the strength to look up.
"Mr. Frodo sir." Sam said in disbelief, "I think you should come see this."
Hesitantly, Frodo pulled himself up and looked at what Sam wanted him to see. He was bending over Cody and was pointing at her stomach. Her shirt was ripped from the blade but there was no blood. Frodo opened her shirt just enough to examine the wound that she had inflicted on herself. The only thing on her stomach was a thin, white scar from her sword.
"What does that mean?" Sam asked.
Before Frodo could answer Sam, Cody's eyes flew wide open but she still did not breathe. Her eyes were as black as jet and no emerald could be seen, not even the whites of her eyes were visible. As the hobbits watched the blackness began to swirl around and slowly started to fade away. When the last of it was gone Cody took in a deep breathe and looked around wildly.
When her eyes came to rest on Frodo her muscles relaxed in relief. Pure joy radiated from her as the last of the blackness left her. Tears welled in her eyes and she jumped into a hug in Frodo's opened arms.
"It's gone Frodo." she cried into his shoulder, "I'm free, I'm free."
There were no words to express the happiness that Frodo felt when he heard those two words. All he could do was hold her tighter as if she would disappear from with in his arms. As they stood there they began to sway back and forth as if they were dancing to music.
Frodo intertwined his fingers into her hair and gently drew her closer. Her only response was running her fingers through his and then wrapping her arms around his neck.
"I promise you," she whispered, "I will never hurt you again."
"You could never hurt me." he sighed.
"But I could have." she argued.
"Lets not talk about that right now. You are free! You don't need to worry about such things anymore."
Cody smiled and rested her head in the crook of his neck and enjoyed the feeling of being whole.

Sam couldn't help but feel jealously between Frodo and Cody. They seemed so happy together and nothing could separate them; not even death. He thought about his own love, Rosie, back home in the Shire. Tears welled up in his eyes as he thought about the girl and had to leave the cave.
When he reached the mouth of the cave he breathed in the sweet air from the freshly cleaned Earth. The ground squished between his toes and a soft breeze ruffled his hair and sent goose-flesh down his arms but he paid no head to it.
"Is it safe?" he heard an oh so familiar voice ask.
"What are you talkin' about?" Sam asked in confusion.
"Is it safe? Is the Darkness gone?" Sméagol asked again, repeating his first question.
"Yes it's safe, the Darkness is gone forever."
A crooked smile formed on the lips of the creature as he scampered down the dirty hole.
'How did he know about Cody's Darkness?' Sam wondered as he watched Sméagol disappear.
