Chapter Two
‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡
As the day progressed Frodo grew fonder of Sméagol and the creature to him. He never left the hobbit's side and tried to please him in any way he could. Cody and Sam walked side by side and glared at the thing. They still did not trust him even though he served as a good guide.
"I just don't understand one thing." Sam said.
"And what's that?" Cody asked. She turned towards the gardener and waited for him to finish.
"How did Gollum escape Mordor if he was being held a prisoner?"
Cody thought about that for a while and she suddenly felt scared. "Escaped or set free?"
Sam looked at her with a look of horror that reflected off of her face and continued walking. She had never thought about that before and now she feared the creature rather than hated it.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Three days had passed and Sméagol had begun to talk less and less in third person. He was also able to complete a sentence with out coughing up the word 'Gollum.'
"Nice hobbitses." he would tell Frodo and would then quickly flash a glare at Sam and would continue walking. He never said anything to Cody and she began to wonder why.
That night they had set up camp under a large shrub that was able to house all of them under it's branches. Sam built a very small fire and began to boil some sort of root he had found earlier that day.
"What's that?" Sméagol asked and started to dip his finger in the water when Sam shooed him away.
"Its burdock root and, if you don't mind, I would like it if you kept your fingers out of the water."
"Eew." Sméagol cried and backed away from the pot. "I don't likes plants." his eyes grew wide and he began to smile as he came up with an idea. "How bouts Sméagol go gets hobbitses fish?"
"That wont be necessary thank you." Sam said with out even looking up from his work.
Sméagol sat down with a frown on his face and started drawing in the dirt with his spidery fingers.
"Sméagol." Frodo called. He and Cody sat together on a small root that came out of the dirt and went back in like a whale coming up for air.
"Yes nice hobbitses?" he scampered up to him and plopped down in front of them.
"You can go hunt for yourself tonight. Just be back by sunrise."
"Yes, thank you nice hobbitses." and with that he ran out and disappeared into the night.
"Why did you just do that?" Cody asked when she couldn't hear Sméagol anymore.
"Do what?" he asked turning to her with a confused look. His blue eyes were lit up from the light of the moon that shone between two branches and shadows from the fire danced across his face.
"Why did you let him go out on his own? How do you know if he will even come back?"
"I don't know if he will come back." he gently said.
"Then why did you do that." she didn't want to share her suspicion with him for she didn't want him to become worried, he had enough on his plate already.
"You need to stop worrying love. He will come back, as much as I hate to say it, the Ring will draw him back. That smells good Sam." he said, dropping the subject, and walked over to his friend.
"That's what I'm afraid of." she whispered to herself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cody shivered and whimpered in the cold night. Frodo sat beside her and watched as she tried to get warm. He had wrapped both of his blankets and his cloak over her but she continued to shake. He laid down next her and tried to warm her with his own body heat.
"Ssshh, I'm here." he whispered.
"No." she moaned.
He leaned back and looked at her twisted face. At first he thought she had been talking to him but she continued.
"You told me you wouldn't hurt him."
A soft whisper surrounded them but there was no owner to the voice.
"I will not do it." she said in a demanding voice.
'Do what?' he thought to himself.
Just then she let out a piercing scream and he jumped in surprise. He backed away as she began to thrash around.
"What's going on?" Sam asked, suddenly appearing next to him.
"I- I don't know." Frodo stammered.
"Stop!" she screamed. "I'll do anything!" she finally gave in. "Yes my lord." she said in a deep, rasping voice that did not belong to her. "Just please don't hurt him." she whimpered in her own voice. The whisper started again and then the presence suddenly left the small camp.
"Cody?" Frodo asked.
Cody shot up and looked around and seemed to be frightened of something.
"Please, leave this place!" she cried. She was clearly still in her dream and thought the whispers were still there.
"Cody, it's me." he said gently.
She looked over at him and began to cry in relief. "Oh, Frodo!" she embraced him in a hug and buried her face into his shoulder.
"Ssh." he soothed, "It's okay, it was only a dream." he knew it wasn't a dream from the way she screamed and the whispers in the camp.
"I wish the Darkness was never placed on me." she sobbed.
"As would all say in such times." he said, repeating what she had told him when they had left Moria. "Go back to sleep." he whispered.
"I can't, he'll come back."
"I promise you, he will not hurt you. I will protect you."
She seemed comforted by his words and relaxed just a little bit in his arms. The initial shock was over and drowsiness began to settle on her.
"Hush now, my baby
Be still love don't cry
Sleep like you're rocked by the stream
Sleep and remember this river lullaby,
And I'll be with you when you dream."
After he had only sung the first stanza she had fallen back to sleep and he hummed the rest. He gently placed her back on the ground, as not to wake her, and laid down with many thoughts in his head.
'Who had she been talking to? What did she have to do? Was this thing going to hurt me?' he thought to himself.
With none of these questions answered he fell into an uneasy sleep beside her.
---------What did you guys think? This was one of my longer chapters (I think) so I hope you didn't mind. Who had been talking to Cody? Will it come after Frodo? Will Sméagol (a.k.a. Gollum) play a major role along with the Darkness? I guess you'll have to find out when I'm finished with the next chapter!!:D (Just a heads up this book may be smaller than the first because only half of the original was on Frodo and Sam. Who knows, it may end up being bigger!)------------
