Chapter Twenty-Three

She stood on the bank of a wide river that rested in the heart of a forest. The trees were a lush green and the occasional leaf would spiral down to the forest floor. Birds raced each other as they flew from branch to branch and sang their sweet songs. Fish leaped out of the water as they made their incredible journey down stream. A soft breeze blew between the trees and ruffled her neatly combed hair.

Cody hid behind a tree as the woman turned her body towards her. Her golden hair was in perfect waves that rippled down to the small of her back. She wore a light cream dress that trailed in the back and the sleeves hung down and almost touched the forest floor. A small golden crown made of thin wires wrapped itself around her elegant head and disappeared in her hair. Her eyes were the palest blue, but seemed to stare right into Cody's soul.

'Welcome Cody.' the woman said to her, yet, she did not open her mouth to speak. Her voice was that like silk yet it was deep and powerful all the same.

'Where am I Lady?' Cody asked her. She slowly stepped out from behind her tree and faced the elf. She felt small inside and weak next to this beautiful creature.

'Do you not recognize your home?'

'It has been close to a year since I have last seen my home. Why have you brought me here?'

'I have come on my own matters, I am here to help you daughter.' she then withdrew from one of her sleeves a small crystal vial. A small orb rested inside of it and glowed softly. Rainbows cascaded from the bottle and fell upon the forest floor and on Lady Galadriel's dress.

'What is this?' Cost asked as she was handed the glowing vial. She stared down at it in awe and was reminded of the star Frodo had received when they had left Lórien.

"It is the star Tumalíer, an elven spirit. She will shine when you are in need but she will only do it once.'

'How do you know I will need her Lady?'

'I have foreseen your future little one,' Galadriel's voice suddenly became far away as if she were recalling something and speaking her thoughts, 'and it is shrouded in darkness.'

'My whole life has been in the dark. Please, tell me what happened Lady!'

'I cannot do that little one for it is too horrible for your ears, that is why I gave you Tumalíer.'

'If you cannot tell me my future then can you do one thing for me?'

'And what would that be?'

'Show me what has become of Meriadoc Brandybuck.'

'Is this all you ask?'

'Yes Lady.'

'This way.' she then turned her body back towards the river and moved her arm in that direction. Cody hesitantly walked to the river's bank and peered into the water. Her heart raced as an image slowly began to appear on the water's surface.

An armoured soldier rode into battle on a steel grey stallion. Another rider rode with him, but this soldier was smaller. Small locks of curly blond hair had made their way out of the helmet and blew around the soldier's face. His brown eyes shone with the desire to fight but there was a slight hint of fear in them.

The image shifted to reveal another image that Cody did not wish to see. The Dark Witch King, the Darkness that had been inside of her, loomed over the soldier that Merry had been riding with. He grabbed him by the throat and lifted the Rohan rider in the air. Suddenly, the Darkness dropped the soldier and fell onto his knees. Merry had stabbed the Witch in the back of the knee with the sword he had gotten from the Burrow-Down when the hobbits were making their way to Bree.

Merry now laid on the ground, clutching his right arm, while his sword slowly deteriorated. Black veins slowly made their way up his arm and where ever they touched his skin turned grey. His eyes rolled back into his head and his eyelids fluttered shut.

"Merry!" Cody screamed, she tried to reach out to him but the image flowed down the river and out of her reach. "What happened to him?" she demanded not even bothering to speak through thoughts.

'Don't worry daughter, this has not come to pass yet. Your brother is safe in the present.'

'I should have gone with him and Pippin, then that wouldn't happen.' she thought to herself and ran her finger through her hair.

'I have said in the past that even the smallest person can change the course of the future but, some things were destined to happen.'

'Like what?'

'Like the two bearers were destined to fall in love.'

'How do you know this?'

'Not even I know why some things are meant to be dear child!' Galadriel said with a hint of laughter.

'What am I to do now Lady?'

'Now, you back to your world.' Galadriel snapped her fingers and Cody was thrown into the present.

"We're there." Frodo sighed, he did not see that she was awake so she closed her eyes once again and clung onto him tighter.

'Here we go.' she thought to herself.
