Chapter Twenty-Five

As night crept over the ruined river town fear made its way into the hearts of each soldier. Some prayed to their ancestors to guide their sword and to protect them in battle while some remained silent. All was silent except for the clink of the watchmen's armour as they quaked in fear. Men marched to and fro as they were assigned different parts of the city to protect. Faramir made his way to each battlement and gave his men encouraging words before the battle.

The red fires of Mount Doom could be seen glowing in the distance from the rivers of lava flowing out of the mountain's dome. Even from so far away the mountain gave little light to the stone city. A hazy cloud drifted out of Mordor and prowled across the fields of Gondor. The land and air beneath the dreaded cloud was dark and brown as if dust was being stirred up for ash was being blown away from Mount Doom. All of the men knew instantly that the next sunrise would be the last one they would see.

"Sir," a soldier asked his captain, "When is the Enemy to show up? We were told at night fall they would be here. It is now getting close to the middle of the night. Where are they?"

"What is your name soldier?" Faramir asked the man.

"Lazgus son of Marxus," he replied proudly and placed his right fist over his heart.

"Tell me, Lazgus, do you want the Enemy to be show up?"

"No Sir."

"Then why do you ask for their appearance?"

"Because your men are growing tired. They have been here since the dawn of yesterday and have not rested since. By the time the Enemy shows they will be too tired and weak to fight."

"When the time comes, they will fight." Faramir told the man and walked off.

"My lord," the dark, cloaked figured rasped as he knelt down before an occupied throne. It was made of pure black marble with thorn like pieces all around it. On the throne sat a fully armoured man with a black cloak draped over his shoulders. He rapped his nine fingers against the stone arm rest as he waited impatiently for his servant to finish. At his side stood a man, or what used to be a man; he wore a helmet that covered his face except his mouth, the rest of his body was garbed in black robes.

"What is it Mazgar?" he growled.

"The hobbit girl, she has reached Osgiliath with the Ring Bearer."

"This is not news to my ears, I have know she would make it to Osgiliath. Why do you bring this up?"

"She is vulnerable there, they are getting closer and closer to Mordor with each passing day."

"She is always vulnerable! She is but a mere halfling!" Sauron laughed a hideous laugh.

"She is stronger than what you think my lord. She has been able to resist me, resisted to the point where she killed herself. Something is in her that I have never felt before."

"That thing you have felt is called love Mazgar, I know for I once upon a time loved. But love is for weaklings, it gets in the way of true power!"

"She would make a lovely addition to our Riders though."

"What are you asking of me?" Sauron asked and leaned forward in his chair.

"I am asking for your permission to let me send out the Nazgūl to capture both of the hobbits."

"Very well." Sauron said with a wave of his armoured hand and leaned back in his chair. The Witch King stood up and let out a blood curdling scream that would have made the bravest of warriors faint with fear. In the very depths of Mordor rose three great figures that let out shrieks in reply. Mazgar watched from the tower as they made their way to the river city of Osgiliath.

"Uvidíme sa navzájom opät' Cody dcéru mrtvych." he rasped it seemed to himself.

'We shall see each other soon Cody daughter of the Dead.' a voice whispered in her head.

'Leave this place!' she demanded. Her only reply was an ear splitting howl and she so desperately wanted to cover her own. She sat up from her sleeping space and screamed thinking she was still in her mind speaking to the Witch King.

"Cody, it was just a dream." Frodo was instantly by her side and cradled her in his arms.

"But it wasn't a dream, it was real." she cried, "They're coming for us Frodo."

"They won't get us, I promise." he vowed.

"Time to get up halflings." a voice said in front of them, "Come see your last sunrise, for it may never rise after this day." he said solemnly.

"You can admire the sunrises later, for now, you must come with me." Faramir said as he strode into the small space. He lifted Frodo up by the back of his shirt and he did the same to Sam. "Come." he called as if he were calling a dog.

The hobbits grabbed their packs and followed after him with heavy hearts. A Ranger followed behind them while leading Sméagol who was bound by thick ropes. They followed the man through the maze like streets until they opened up to reveal an open courtyard.

A man dressed in light grey clothing walked up to them with men flanking behind him. Neither of the men greeted each other but simply grasped each others wrist in a sign of trust.

"Faramir," the man finally said, "They have already attacked us on the west side of the city. We are far outnumbered!"

"I understand that but I need you to take these to my father," he said as he shoved the halflings over to the man, "They are a great gift that are a weapon we can use in this war." As he began to walk away Sam blurted out to the Captain.

"Do you want to know why your brother died?" This made Faramir stop in his tracks and turn back towards the hobbits.

"Samwise, hold your tongue!" Cody hissed but he kept on going.

"He wanted to control the Ring and it drove him mad! He swore to protect the Ring and the one who bears it. He tried to kill Frodo for it!"

"Silence!" Faramir yelled, "How dare you speak of my brother like that!"

As the two battled it out no one saw the evil look that slowly appeared on Frodo's face. His eyes seemed to darken and he stared at Faramir until he spoke in a devilish voice, "They're here."

Faramir gave Frodo a look that no one could read, "Mr. Frodo?" Sam asked a bit worried.

"They've come."

"Here is where the deed shall be done." Cody said in a voice that no one had heard before. It was not the same voice she spoke in when the Darkness was using her. Instead it was her voice that was much more raspy and evil sounding. Before anyone could say another word three blood chilling cries echoed through the stone city.
