Chapter Seven

The next morning the hobbits were met by a light drizzle on the open plains. When Frodo woke he stretched and felt as if a part of him was missing. His blood went cold when he realised that the familiar weight of the Ring was not around his neck. He opened his shirt and looked down at his bare chest.
Two scares were tattooed on his chest; one from the cave troll in Moria and the more recent one from the Nazgūl. Around the dagger wound, red claw marks were run over it from his desperate clawing the night before, but no ring. He searched frantically for the golden band; he searched in his bedding, through his pockets and through his pack.
As the sun began to shine through the mouth of the cave a small glint caught his eye and his blood ran cold once again. Laying halfway between him and Cody was the One Ring strung on a golden chain. Just then, Cody sat up and stared at the Ring with great interest. Both hobbits sat still until Frodo cautiously approached the Ring. With out taking his eye off of her, Frodo bent down, grabbed the Ring and placed it back around his neck.
When his fingers barely touched the cool metal Cody flinched as if someone had hit her. When it was placed around his neck she cringed and slowly stood up to her full height. Her hand moved towards her sword and fear shone through Frodo's eyes. A glint of a smile spread across her face but was soon stopped by a scrunch of her face.
She dropped her short sword and fell to her knees. She grabbed fist fulls of her hair and opened her mouth in a soundless scream. She looked up at Frodo with a pleading look in her eyes. Her eyes flashed a dark green and in that instance the pleading left and was replaced with malice.
"Stop!" she screamed and her eyes returned to normal, "I will not let you hurt anymore people that I love. Leave me and return to the evil shadows that you crawled out from." Her voice was strong at the beginning of her command but slowly weakened as she continued.
"Why does all this stuff happen to her?" Sam asked, suddenly appearing next to Frodo who watched her thrash around. For the first time on the whole journey, true pity was heard in Sam's voice for Cody.
"I don't know Sam." Frodo admitted, "She is stronger than any of us, even Strider. I wouldn't have lasted a day in her shoes with that monster in her head."
"Oh, such big commands for one so small." the Darkness taunted the hobbits once again, "You know you will never win this battle young halfling." Her eyes turned back to the dark green of the darkness and she glared at the two hobbits.
Slowly, she turned to her sword, knelt down, picked it up from the dusty floor and moved towards the hobbits. They were defenseless and had been backed up to the opposite wall. The Darkness raised the Mordorian blade above Cody's head and aimed. Before it brought the blade down her hands jerked slightly and seemed as if they had hit a wall.
"What are you doing?" the Darkness cried, fear rang through the hoarse voice.
"If I can't win this battle, then you won't win either." she said in her bravest voice.
"Cody, don't!" Frodo shouted.
"I love you." she whispered.
She squeezed her eyes shut as a single tear fell down her face. The invisible wall vanished and her arms swung down and the sword met its target.
"No~o~o~o~o!"
---------Sorry it took me so long to write this. I literally just now thought of it and wrote it down before it left my head. Soooo... Hear it is!!!!----------
