Chapter Three

‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡‡

The next morning dawned bright and clear but in the distance clouds promised a light rain. Sam had made them breakfast with the left over burdock. When they had finished they began to pack up when Sam stopped and looked around.

"I thought you told Gollum to be back by sunrise." he said, he refused to call the creature by his name; Sméagol.

"That I did." Frodo said with out looking up.

"Then were is he?"

"Here I am!" a head popped into the camp and was shortly followed by his body.

"Oh the joy." Sam grumbled under his breathe.

As they were leaving the camp Cody suddenly stumbled and fell to the dirt below.

"Cody!" Frodo said with shock and concern in his voice.

"I'm fine." she tried to tell him but when she tried to stand her legs would not obey and she fell back to the ground. Her head pounded and her vision flickered as she tried to stand once more.

"No, you're not. Let me help." he wrapped her right arm around his neck and lifted her on her feet.

"You don't need to do this." she grunted with pain.

"Yes I do." he stated. He looked into her eyes and saw that she was in pain and was holding back the tears. "He's doing this to you isn't he?"

Her only response was a nod of her head and another groan as a wave of pain washed over her. She felt her hand slowly reach for his pocket, she tried to stop it but she couldn't. She felt the splinter begin to grow and take control over her once again.

"Frodo," she said trying to stay calm, "Put me down."

"No, you cant stand by yourself."

"Frodo, put me down!" she almost screamed. At that moment he realised what was going on but she had grabbed his pocket and was trying to rip it open. He flung her to the ground as she lunged for him.

"Frodo Baggins, give me the Ring." she hissed in the blood chilling voice.

"Run Frodo!" she cried. With out her doing she drew out her sword and approached him. Before she could reach him Sam stepped in front on him and held out his own sword.

"Stay back!" he ordered.

"Samwise Gamgee, the mighty gardener." the Darkness taunted. Her eyes had turned to a dark, hidious green color instead of the beautiful emerald that they were. "And what are you going to do, hm? Trim the hedge that stands behind us? You are not a fighter, admit it!"

"Don't listen to it!" she cried again, taking control for a second before she was shoved aside.

"Leave her!" he shouted.

"Never!" the Darkness hissed. The two lunged at each other but Sam was flicked aside like a bug. No one stood between the Darkness and the Ring Bearer now. Effortlessly, the Darkness knocked Frodo to the ground before he could even move.

"Cody, I know you're in there!"

"There is no Cody, she is dead to the world, it's only me!"

"Cody! You are stronger than this! Fight back!"

The shell of the hobbit girl raised the sword above her head, preparing to deal the death blow. Frodo frantically rummaged through his pocket and withdrew a yellowed piece of paper.

"Remember this?" he asked unfolding it.

"My drawing." she whimpered. Her eyes returned to the bright green and her face relaxed. She looked up at her sword that was raised in the air and looked at the object it almost struck. Tears rolled down her dirty face and her hands began to shake, causing her sword to clatter to the ground.

As the splinter went dormant once again her knees buckled and she collapsed to the ground. Frodo drug himself to her side and cradled her in his arms.

"No! Get away from me!" she shouted to him. She shoved herself off of him and rolled in the dirt. Emotional pain flashed through his eyes as she crawled away from him. "All I cause us is pain. I almost killed you Frodo!"

"But you couldn't help it. You didn't have control." he argued.

"Exactly, I didn't have control and that could have been what caused the end of you."

"But I don't care about that." he tried to explain. He walked over to her but before he made it to her she screamed. "I hate you!" He stopped dead in his tracks and stared at the shaking girl. "I hate you." she sobbed.

His own knees gave out and he sunk to his knees and buried his face in his hands. Cody fell to her side and her body was racked with sobs. Sam stood by and watched while his own tears formed in his eyes. Sméagol watched in approval as she had tried to take the Ring and formed a plan in his evil mind.

----------What did you think of this chapter? I will admit it, I almost cried myself writing this. I guess that's what happens when you write a story. You feel connected to the characters like you actually know them (okay now I'm acting like a geek but what ever) The next chapter may take some time because now I have writer's block again right after I broke my last one:( ----------
