The day after my father died, I received a text from Mahiru.

Hey, are you okay?

I type back, I'm fine. As fine as I'll ever be without him.

I watch as she types. 

I'm so sorry for your loss. He was a great man, I heard.

Well, your father doesn't seem to think that, I reply.

It takes her a few minutes to type something.

I'm not like my father, she ends up saying.

Yeah, I know, I reply. I'm tired.

Do you want to talk sometime? Maybe grab a drink if you're up for it? She says. I can tell she's hesitant.

I don't really know why I agreed.

Sure. I send it.

Okay. I'll see you in a bit.

I switch off my phone.

Just as school starts to become better, my life turns for the worst and shatters into a million pieces. Somehow I think even somebody like Mahiru can pick up those pieces and fix them back together.

I need a distraction.

Maybe drinks will solve it.

I open up my laptop and start planning my father's-
