Chapter 14: Rush

Liana's at the Talon writing the daily specials on the chalkboard, when she hears Clark say, "Hey." Liana smiles and says, "Hey, um... uh, did you hear about Travis?" Clark says, "Yeah, pretty sad, huh?" Liana says, "Yeah, uh, the police think that he might have been on something. Which is the only explanation. I mean, we always assume that we have all the time in the world, but, but we never know. The school counselor told me I need to look forward embrace living, carpe diem. At first, I thought it sounded corny, but the more I think about it, she's right. You know, I just, I don't wanna be a spectator in my own life." Clark nods and says, "Yeah, me neither. We should go on a date... together. In the near future." Liana is surprised and says, "Are you serious?" Clark nods and says, "I was. But if you don't wanna go... I understand." Liana softly says, "When?" Clark says, "You mean you'll go?" Liana says, "Yeah. I assume that was the answer you were looking for." Clark smiles and says, "Yeah, I just didn't think it'd be that easy." Liana says, "Why?" Clark sighs and says, "Because of Whitney." Liana nods and says, "I have taken my time to heal and I think he would be happy if I moved on." Clark smiles and says, "Well, how about tomorrow?" Liana smiles and says, "Sounds like fun." Clark softly smiles and says, "Alright, it's, it's a date." Liana softly smiles and says, "Okay." Clark then walks away and Liana can't believe Clark just asked her out and smiles. Later, Chloe comes to the Talon and Chloe says, "Hey, I didn't hear you leave this morning." Liana says, "Oh, I had to be here first thing." Chloe says, "You know, if I didn't know any better. I'd say you were avoiding me." Liana says, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel that why. It's just how I cope." Chloe says, "You know I'm always here if you need to talk." Liana smiles and says, "I know." Chloe says, "Listen, if you don't feel like talking um, I thought maybe we could go to Metropolis tomorrow and do some serious shopping. My dad even said that he would join in on the conspiracy and get us out of school early." Liana says, "Oh thanks, and I'd love to but I already have plans with Clark." Chloe says, "Oh! Uh... what kind of plans?" Liana says, "Well, I never really thought this would happen, but he asked me out on a date." Chloe says, "Wow! Um, are you sure it's okay going out with him after what happened with Whitney?" Liana says, "Yeah. Clark was worried about that too, but I told him that I have taken my time to heal and I think Whitney would be happy that I'm moving on. Look, Chloe, if this is gonna bother you, I won't go out with him." Chloe says, "No. My feelings for Clark are so ancient... they're, they're fossilized. Uh, seriously, you should, you should go for it." Liana softly says, "Are you sure?" Chloe says, "Liana, does it really matter how I feel? I mean, if I was in your position I'd do the exact same thing. Don't let me be your excuse." Liana smiles and says, "Okay. I'm... I'm glad we cleared the air." Chloe nods and smiles, "Me too. I'll see you tonight." Liana says, "Okay."

The next day, Liana's at the talon when Clark walks in. Liana smiles and says, "Hey, you're early. Wasn't expecting you for another hour. Not that I mind. I'm really excited about our date." Clark says, "So was I." Liana loses her smile and says, "Why are you speaking in the past tense?" Clark says, "Liana, I can't go out with you tonight. Believe me, if, if it wasn't a life-and-death situation I wouldn't break this date for anything." Liana says, "What's going on?" Clark says, "It's Pete. Something happened to him at the rave and if I don't get him to the hospital, he could die." Liana says, "Is there anything I can do to help?" Clark says, "Chloe and I have it covered." Liana says, "Okay." Clark says, "It's just that I've done this to you in the past, and I... just wanted you to have a reason this time." Liana says, "It's not a problem. I guess we can reschedule another time." Clark says, "Yeah." They both softly smile at each other. They then hear Chloe laughing and Chloe says, "Hey, lovebirds, look who I found." They see Pete next to Chloe and Clark says, "Chloe, we were supposed to meet at your house." Liana says, "Pete, how are you feeling." Pete smiles and says, "Awesome. Never felt better in my life." Liana says, "Oh, Clark made it sound like you were on your deathbed." Pete says, "And you believed him? Haven't you learned by now? That's just Clark being Clark." Chloe and Pete start laughing and Liana softly says, "I guess not." Pete says, "Ouch." Liana then walks away from them. Later, Liana walks in the Talon and sees Chloe and Clark kissing. Clark says, "Li-Liana, this is not what it looks like." Chloe  smiles and says, "Yeah, it is, Liana. It's exactly what it looks like. Oh, and guess what, Clark told me everything." Liana walks away crying and looks back at them with her tear stained face. Chloe says, "And I mean everything." Clark says, "Liana, I can explain." Liana cries, "Don't bother." Liana then leaves. Liana then comes outside and dumps a bucket of water on Clark, because he was knocked out. Clark says, "Liana. Where's Chloe and Pete?" Liana says, "I don't know. And to be honest, I really don't care." Liana walks away, then she turns to Clark, but he's gone. Later, Liana goes to visit Chloe in the hospital. Liana goes to see Chloe and Clark together and says, "Uh, I'll just come back later." Clark says, "Uh, it's, it's okay, Liana, I was just leaving. I'll catch up with you later, okay?" Chloe says, "Promise?" Clark says, "Yeah. Liana, I'm sorry." Liana says, "I didn't come here to see you, Clark. I came to see my best friend, she's been ill."  liana walks over to Chloe. Chloe says, "Hi." Liana smiles and says, "Hey." Liana gives Chloe the flowers she's holding. Chloe smiles and says, "Thanks." Liana says, "You're welcome." Chloe says, "Not that I really remember everything that happened but, um, I have a feeling I should be apologizing to you." Liana says, "Oh, let's just say, you weren't yourself." Chloe says, "So I guess your date with Clark was kind of a bust. Did I screw it up?" Liana says, "Trust me, Clark screwed it up all by himself." Chloe says, "What'd he do this time?" Liana says, "Well... I caught him making out with another girl." Chloe says, "Really?" Liana nods and says, "Yeah." Chloe says, "Who was the girl?" Liana shrugs her shoulders and says, "I didn't recognize her." Later, Liana's at the Talon closing up. Liana sees Clark walk in with a red rose and pizza. Liana says, "What's this?" Clark says, "My pathetic attempt at an apology. I plead temporary insanity." Liana sighs and says, "Clark, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that you and Chloe still have feelings for each other." Clark says, "Liana, Chloe and I are just friends." Liana says, "Obviously closer friends than we are." Liana walks away and Clark says, "Liana, that's not true." Liana says, "Clark, you can't lie to me about something I saw with my own eyes. For once, just be honest with yourself. I know why Chloe was kissing you, but why were you kissing her back? I have to lock up." Clark leaves the rose and walks away. Liana grabs the rose and smells it, then she throws it in the trash.
