Matt's POV: Shortly after a few more comments from the commissioner, I smiled as we prepared to get to the next wards. And luckily for me, I was going to be presenting these next awards. That's when the commissioner went to introduce me. "Now, time to get to the awards we are excited about. We all know that you Captains and Lieutenants have been fighting to be nominated for this." We all laughed and agreed with him when he said that. "However, I am not going to be presenting this award. Rather, I am going to introduce former Lieutenant and Captain....as well as nominee for Best Save and Chief of the Year, Chief Matthew Casey."
I smiled when he said that before turning to look at Gabby. I then went to kiss her and just smiled. Going to grab my cards that I had in my coat, I smiled as I prepared to make my way to the stage. Looking at the commissioner, I smiled as I went to shake his hand. "Knock 'em dead." I agreed with him when he said that and just smiled as I prepared to start my speech. "Over the past 15 years, I have learned first hand knowledge of what it means to be a Captain and Lieutenant in the CFD. It takes leadership, dedication and taking risks. I know this all too well. I myself have lost a friend as a Lieutenant. We make the hard decisions and it takes experience."
I then took a breath. "And I am honored to be here to represent all Battalion Chiefs who have nominees for Lieutenants and Captains of the Year." Everybody agreed with me when I said that. "Now, let's start with Lieutenants." Everybody agreed with me when I said that.
Lieutenant Greg Adams, Firehouse 2, Engine 2
Lieutenant Kyle Jackson, Firehouse 18, Engine 18
Lieutenant Greg Grainger, Firehouse 40, Engine 40
Lieutenant Stella Kidd, Firehouse 51, Truck 81
Lieutenant James Chrisom, Firehouse 15, Truck 60Going to open the envelope, I smiled as I looked at the winner. "And this year's Lieutenant of the year....the first female Lieutenant of the Year, Lieutenant Stella Kidd, Truck 81!" I then went to look at my table to see Gabby turning to look at Stella and getting up to go hug her. Severide then went to get up and smiled as he went to kiss her. God, I am so happy that she won. And I am proud to be her Chief. Going to put the envelope down, I smiled as she came to walk over to the stage in her uniform. Going to grab the award, I smiled as I went to go give it to her. "Congrats."
Stella then went to hug me and just smiled because she is so happy that she won. Standing back, I went to watch as she started to speak. "Wow, I totally didn't expect this." Turning to look at me, Stella just smiled. "First, I want to thank my husband Kelly Severide. Thank you for your love and support, and for your encouragement as I tried to become a Lieutenant. You have been my biggest fan and I love you and the boys more than anything in the entire world." Kelly smiled when he said that. "Next, I want to thank Chief Matthew Casey." She then looked at me, smiling.
"Chief, you have taught me everything that I have ever learned when it comes to leading Truck 81. I am so glad that I am on leadership there at the house. Thank you for everything that you have taught me and I am so honored." I agreed with her and smiled as I went to go hug her. She was about to leave...but first, I decided to tell her to stay by whispering in her ear. "I checked who won Captain of the Year. Stay on the stage." She agreed with me when I said that and just smiled at me. I then looked at Commissioner Grissom, who just nodded because he knew.
"Now for the Captain of the Year award. Being a captain is much different from being a Lieutenant. You become responsible for an entire house rather than just a company. It takes a lot of work and dedication, and it also can put a strain on your marriage....I would know because I have experience." Gabby smiled and agreed with me when I said that, nodding. "Now, here are the nominees for Captain of the Year." I then went to go start listing the nominees for Captain of the Year....which include my best friend Kelly Severide (who just so happen to have won).
Captain Greg Delaney, Firehouse 20
Captain James McPlow, Firehouse 31
Captain Kelly Severide, Firehouse 51
Captain Alexis Carson, Firehouse 73
Captain Madison Rhodes, Firehouse 97"And this year's Captain of the Year is....Kelly Severide, Firehouse 51!" Kelly just looked at me when I said that, who was shocked. He then came to get up and just smiled as he came to the stage. Walking up the stairs, he smiled at me and then came to hug me. "Congratulations man." I nodded and smiled. He then went to go walk over to Stella before kissing her softly. "Congrats babe." Stella agreed with him. "Congrats to you too babe." Kelly agreed with her when she said that and just smiled as he came to grab the award. He then went to go start to speak.
"First, I want to thank my wife Stella Kidd who has been the best possible mother to our twins. I am so proud of you winning Lieutenant of the Year." Stella smiled and agreed with him when he said that. "And I am so proud to have had a great mentor as a Captain. Thanks Matt." I nodded and agreed with him when he said that and just smiled as we both looked at each other. Going to turn to look at Grissom, he smiled. "And thank you Commissioner Grissom to your mentorship. I also want to thank my dad Captain Benny Severide for your belief in me." I agreed.
Clapping, I just smiled because my house has been a sweep. I am so glad that we all won so far and I just smiled as I looked at Kelly. He then came over to hug me and just smiled as we both prepared to make our way back to our tables so that we could go listen for the next award...more specifically, best save and Battalion Chief of the year. (Which I am nominated in both.)
