The pediatrician was never somewhere Pyre thought he'd go after he'd gotten his necessary shots to begin grade school. His father had always ignored the calls for check-ups and quite frankly, he didn't give a shit about it, either.
He stared up at the mural that covered the longest wall in the waiting room, eying the fish with distrust. It said that the shark was the sick one, but unless the artist painting the mural had a seizure in the middle, he definitely didn't buy it, because that dolphin looked like a wreck.
"This is the case file. It has all of his information in it and our reason for the visit."
Pyre turned his fuzzy head and looked way up as Fen glanced over at him with a nervous smile. He hadn't been aware that he'd even had a case file, or that Fen had any real information on him, but the guy did work for the government and specialized in work with the homeless. He had no doubt that finding a bit of information on a nineteen year old run away wouldn't be too hard for him.
The woman behind the desk was silent for a few minutes as she read through it, taking enough time with the task that Pyre's little panda mind lost interest and began swatting at some of the little fish on the mural before him.
Can you focus for five seconds, please?
His animal wasn't exactly out of his control, but it also didn't really listen to him all that well, either. It made him get way more distracted than he normal would be, and it also had a habit of excessively gnawing on things, as if it were still teething.
"Alright, you're all set," Fen said as he suddenly appeared beside him and scooped up his suddenly-squirmy red panda.
It wanted to continue its attack on the paintings, but when he was snuggled up against Fen's firm chest, Pyre out-muscles the stubborn punk and settled in to his rightful place.
Too bad he has to wear a shirt in here... and he also put on a jacket cause the air-conditioner is chilly. So sad.
"Behave," Fen said, making Pyre glare up at him.
I am clearly behaving. I haven't even tried to pee on you once even though this bladder is terrible.
The man was silent as he took a seat in one of the many chairs lining the area by one of the two large windows. He expected him to take out his phone and try to get a bit of work done with his emails or something, but instead, he simply began running his fingers through the soft fur on Pyre's head. It was actually quite soothing once he got a tempo going, allowing Pyre to settle down a bit.
They waited for a while after that, and Pyre watched as person after person came and went. He didn't mind, though, since he was still getting plenty of attention from Fen, and the guy was also being pretty chill about being skipped over a lot. It had to have been about two hours later when their name was finally called.
No one else was in the room now beside the receptionist, making Pyre a little more comfortable as he gently tapped his paw against Fen's chest, requesting to get down. He hadn't quite gotten the hang of walking right in his animal form. It was probably because he didn't want his panda to have more control of that aspect than he did, so he was constantly fighting himself on how to place his paws so that he could balance right with his fluffy tail swinging awkwardly behind himself.
Thankfully, he didn't make himself look like too much of a fool as he slowly managed to follow Fen into a back room. There was a young guy standing at the far end, making Pyre and his animal side agree on hesitation. He wasn't technically afraid of him, but he did remember the stress of the shots as a kid, and his animal was blaring alarms of stranger danger in his mind.
