The blue energy that had emitted as a result of the Tesseract "exploding" and opening the portal to space, dispersed into the air and gathered into an area up in the ceiling. Noelle noticed it swirled around, much like it had before the portal had been opened.

What she hadn't noticed was the figure kneeling in the middle of the room where the portal had been not seconds ago. The blueish energy from the Tesseract sizzled off of him like steam.

Noelle could hear Fury's men quietly moving up beside them, rifles pointed at the kneeling figure, who slowly began to rise.

She couldn't make out the color of his clothes in the dim lightning, but he appeared to be wearing some kind of leather that looked like medieval armor– something straight out of Middle-earth or the Renaissance fair.

His hair was jet black, and slicked back. The first thing Noelle noticed about his face was a very evil smile plastered on it that sent a chill running down her spine.

"Sir, please put down the spear!" came Fury's voice behind her.

Noelle blinked. She had just noticed the spear with the blue, glowing gem. Immediately, she could sense it.

The blue light coming from the spear felt almost the exact same as the Tesseract...

She ignited her lightsabers.

The man in the leather glanced down at the spear in his hand, then straight back up at her, Fury and Barton.

Noelle had never in her life seen anyone move so fast. She almost didn't react in time as the medieval man shot a blast of energy from the spear at them. Barton pushed Fury out of harm's way onto the ground as Noelle deflected the blast with her sabers.

Gunshots fired. The man leapt into the air, and down upon the soldiers, impaling them with his spear. Bullets seemingly had no effect on him, or the soldiers were just terrible shots.

The man shot several more energy blasts at equipment as Barton pulled his gun out on him, then he kicked several people out of his way like they were average mall cops and not highly trained S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (which was what Noelle assumed they were).

She didn't have time to stop him. It all happened so fast–

The man grabbed Barton by the arm and touched the tip of his spear to his chest.

"You have heart," he said.

"NO!" Noelle shouted. She began to run forward, but not before blue energy coursed through Barton's neck, and up his face. His irises turned a pale cold blue, the same color as the gem inside the spear.

She came to a halt halfway between Fury and Barton, realization dawning on her. Whatever was in that scepter was mind-controlling him, and it felt dangerously like the Tesseract. Noelle felt... strangely drawn to it in a way she couldn't explain. The "object" in the spear was calling to her.

The man smiled in satisfaction as Barton put his gun back into his holster.

Noelle could sense Fury bristle behind her, and she knew exactly what he was thinking. The Tesseract. They had to protect the Tesseract.

The medieval man was ignoring them both. However, he was going one-by-one around the room, brainwashing the rest of the S.H.I.E.L.D. soldiers with the scepter. Soon they would all be taken...

Noelle began to slowly back up to Fury, who had managed to secure the Tesseract in a metal suitcase.

"Smith," he whispered. "You have to get us out of here."

Noelle gritted her teeth. "You can help anytime you want too, you know," she hissed under her breath. "Now, I'm going to–"

"Please don't," interrupted the silky voice of the raven-haired man. "I still need that."
