Kendall screamed and shot to her feet. The moonlight shined down bright enough to reveal Kameron and his little sister.
She immediately backed away from them as she remembered seeing Kameron shapeshifting earlier. She had a gut feeling that something was interesting about Kameron and his family but she didn't know it would be this.
His sister laughed. "Relax, we're not going to eat you."
Kendall opened her mouth to respond but found it impossible to speak all of a sudden. Her mouth was dry as cotton and it felt like she forgot how to speak. She stared at them, her mind still shocked at what she saw. She couldn't believe she had seen someone shapeshift right in front of her and that they were her next-door neighbors.
"Be nice," Kameron admonished his sister and she thought he gave her a reassuring smile though she couldn't be sure due to how dark it was. "I'm sorry. But I swear, we're not going to hurt you, okay?"
Kendall just nodded even though she wasn't completely sure about that. She had no idea what they were going to do to her.
"We can show you the way back," he continued. "I'm pretty sure your parents are up worrying about you."
"We're close to our houses," his sister said.
Kendall hesitated. She had no idea whether to trust them or not. She feared they would kidnap her and kill her and bury her body where no one would ever find her. But the voice inside of her was speaking again, telling her to trust them and she needed to find a way back to her house anyway.
So she nodded and let them lead her way out of the woods. To her relief, their houses soon appeared and she nearly wept with relief and probably would have if Kameron and his sister hadn't been standing right there.
"Kayla, go inside," Kameron instructed her.
Kayla obeyed and started to go inside but she turned to Kendall and said, "Just to let you know, we're not monsters. We're people, just like you, just a little different."
Kayla went inside before Kendall could respond, though what she would say, she had no idea. Kendall was about to go inside her own house but Kameron stopped her by gently touching her arm. She looked at him in askance, wondering what he was going to say.
"I wanted to apologize for shapeshifting in front of you earlier," he said. "I should have known that would've scared you. I should have thought about that before doing anything."
Kendall finally managed to find her voice and blurted out the first thing that came to her mind. "So you're a shapeshifter."
"Yes."
An awkward silence fell over them.
Kameron cleared his throat. "Again, I am sorry."
"It's fine," said Kendall though she wasn't sure how fine it truly was.
An even more awkward silence fell over them.
"I - uh, I guess I'll see you around," he said and rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably.
"Yeah."
He opened his mouth as if to say something, but in the end, he just nodded and walked into his house. She watched him go, conflicting emotions swirling inside of her then turned and walked into her own house where her parents were waiting for her.
