Kameron dreaded getting up the following morning, knowing what he had to do. He'd been praying that it wouldn't happen, that they'd be able to move on without any of this happening, but the universe always worked against him and now they had a huge mess on their hands.
He slowly got out of bed and got dressed, knowing how much Ma was going to lose it once he told her what he saw the night before. He wished he could just crawl back under the covers and go back to sleep but it was better to get this over with.
Last night, he couldn't sleep, so like what he always did when he couldn't sleep, he went outside, shifted into his fox form, and planned on going for a run in the woods. However, before he could go into the woods, a beautiful, female American bald eagle flew out of Kendall's bedroom. He'd frozen, stunned at what he was seeing.
He'd run after the eagle, his stomach sinking more and more as he followed her. He'd tried telling himself that it was a coincidence, that it was just a regular eagle, but he knew that wasn't true. An eagle didn't just fly out of someone's room like that and the fact he'd given some of her blood. . .
He'd followed her for hours as she happily flew in the sky. He'd mentally begged her to go back to her house but she flew for what felt like an eternity before she finally flew back to her house and into her window.
He'd stood there for a long time, watching the window - for what, he wasn't sure - but nothing happened. He'd gone back inside as the sun slowly rose then fell into bed, getting about an hour's sleep before having to get up for school.
Now he slowly made his way down the steps where Ma was cooking breakfast. Kayla was already sitting there at the table, her earbuds in and listening to whatever playlist she had on.
"Morning," Ma called over her shoulder. "Breakfast will be ready in twenty minutes."
"I need to talk to you," he said. "It can't wait."
Sensing his tone, Ma turned off the stove and put her cooking supplies down. She turned around and said, "What's wrong?"
Kayla didn't notice the change in the mood, invested in what was on her phone.
Kameron took a deep breath and told her what he saw last night and braced himself for what she was going to say.
Ma took a deep breath and sat down at the table. "Are you sure that eagle was Kendall?"
"Yes. I saw it fly out of her room."
Ma rubbed her head. "We'll need to call the Apex and let her know what's going on."
Kameron slowly sat down in the chair across from her. "Am I going to get punished?"
"You might get a warning, but they shouldn't give you a harsh punishment because you gave her your blood without the intent of turning her into a shapeshifter and you were trying to save her, but you might have to live on their property for a while as punishment, but I don't know. I don't know what they'll do and at this rate, all we can do is hope for the best."
Kameron refused to lower his gaze at his mother's glare "Ma, I know what I did will cause a lot of headaches between us, but I'm not sorry for saving her. She could've died if I hadn't helped her and no one deserves to die that young."
Ma's gaze softened. "I'm not saying what you did was wrong, but I'm just worried about what's going to happen next."
Kayla finally noticed them and pulled out her earbuds. "What's going on?"
Neither of them answered. Neither of them knew what to do or say.
"Hello? Anyone?"
