Kendall offered a smile back. "H-hi." She cleared the recliner chair and said, "Have a seat."

"Thanks." He lowered himself and sat down in the chair.

"I should be the one thanking you." Without thinking, she leaned down and gave him a huge hug. "You saved my life. I - I don't know how I can thank you."

"Oh, uh. . ." He cleared his throat and awkwardly patted her back. "You're welcome."

She pulled away and gazed into his eyes. "If it hadn't been for you, I would've died. I hope you know how thankful I am."

"I. . .it's no problem," Kameron said uncomfortably. "I'm just glad you're okay."

"Thanks to you. I wanted to go over there and thank you sooner but I wasn't feeling up to it."

"It's no problem. That wreck was really crazy. I'm glad you're okay."

"Me too. I am surprised I'm not hurt worse though. I am glad I wasn't, don't get me wrong, but the way the wreck was, I thought I would've been hurt a lot worse. My car was destroyed but I guess it was luck I ended up with only some broken ribs and a sprained wrist."

A strange look passed over Kameron's face but it was gone so fast that Kendall thought she was seeing things. "Yeah, luck. And are you healing okay?"

"Yeah. I'm still sore but I am getting better. I'm going to try to go back to school on Monday since I'm feeling better and I don't want to be farther behind."

"Are you excited to go back?"

She shrugged. "Not really, but at least I'll be able to get some normalcy back in my life. This past year has been so crazy I just want the rest of this school year to be normal."

"What's happened? I know you said you moved out of Raven City before moving back in the summer - you know what, you don't have to tell me. It's none of my business."

"No, it's okay. My family and I moved last year because of - personal reasons." She didn't want to talk about being possessed or Hannah and Stephanie having to deal with the haunting. It's not that she felt like Kameron wouldn't believe her or judge her, the whole experience was something she didn't want to have to think or talk about. Even though she was starting to slowly recover from the traumatic situation it still wasn't something she wanted to recount. "The town we moved in was pretty bad. The people and the teachers at my new school were bad and it just wasn't a good fit.

"I even cussed out a teacher because she was being rude about me not knowing how to do a problem." She chuckled. "I know it seems like I'm a bad student but I'm not. I'm actually a good student - except when I get mad."

They both laughed then a brief silence passed between them.

Kendall hesitated before saying, "My sister mentioned you visited a lot in the hospital."

A faint flush appeared on his face. "Yeah, uh, I wanted to see how you were doing. You were bleeding all over and I was scared you weren't going to make it when I pulled you out of the car."

Kendall's stomach dropped. "It was that bad?"

Kameron's gaze lowered. "Yeah."

Tears formed in Kendall's eyes and she turned away before Kameron could see them. It hurt her, truly hit her, right then and there how close she'd been to death.

Kameron cleared his throat. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you."

"No, you didn't." She quickly wiped her eyes and then turned back to him. "I know already said this but thank you."

He just smiled at her.

The question that had been on her mind for weeks surged to the surface out of nowhere. She blurted out of her before she could stop herself. "Why didn't you come to visit me after I woke up?" She regretted the question the second it came out of her mouth. She felt her face grow hot with embarrassment.

Kameron stared at her in surprise. "I - I'm sorry, I've just had a lot going on with school and my family and didn't know if you were even home yet."

"Oh."

The awkwardest of silences of all time grew between them. She kicked herself, feeling like such an idiot, and wished a black hole would swallow her right there.

"I did mean to check on you," said Kameron. "It's just. . .life's been crazy. I should go. My parents'll be home soon."

"Okay," she said quietly and watched as he walked to the front door.

He opened the door and then paused. "I will come by again if you want."

"Yeah, sure," she said distractedly, so caught up in her embarrassment she just wanted him to leave.

He walked out the door and gently closed it behind him.
