Kendall's last normal night with her parents felt like it went way too fast and she tried to savor every moment she could with them.
She didn't do her homework - what was the point? She was going to be sent to that place soon anyway - and spent the time waiting for her parents to come home pacing in her room and calling Hannah. She explained that she was okay but couldn't stand to mention that she was going away. It hurt way too much and she knew Hannah was overwhelmed as well by the whole situation. Kendall knew she should tell her friend about what was about to happen but like with her parents, she wanted to pretend all of this wasn't going to happen for a little while more. She needed as much routine as she got, and knowing Hannah, she would come over here right now and refuse to let her go.
It felt like an eternity before her parents go home from work. The second she heard them enter the house she ran downstairs and gave them huge bearhugs.
"Whoa!" her mom had exclaimed but immediately hugged her back. "Everything okay?"
Kendall had barely managed to hold back her tears and nodded. "Yeah, just happy to see you guys."
She had tried to act normal after that but she must've not done that good of a job since her parents had kept asking her if everything was okay. She'd assured them several times that she was though they kept glancing over at her worriedly.
After they'd eaten dinner, they'd sat down in the living room and put on a movie though she couldn't remember for the life of her what it was or what it was about, her mind too occupied with the next day and her mind trying to process the fact that she was a freaking shapeshifter.
After the movie, she gave her parents another huge hug, and then they went to bed. When she got to her room, she'd texted Taryn a long paragraph that wrote:
Hey Taryn, I wanted to let you know I loved you and that you're the best big sister ever. You're the best big sister someone could ask for and I love you more than anything. Tomorrow you're going to hear something that might shock you but I promise, it won't change anything between us. I still love you and things are gonna be crazy for a while and I don't wanna say everything's gonna be okay cuz I'm scared too, but I will say I love you, and please be there for me.
She read the text over a few times before sending it. She knew Taryn wouldn't text back until morning due to the late hour. Kendall hoped and prayed it wouldn't scare her sister but she didn't know what else to say to express how she felt. She hoped her sister would understand.
After sending the text, she got into her bed and laid back, hoping to try to get some sleep even though she thought it would be impossible, but she was out in five seconds.
She didn't how long she was asleep until the sounds of breaking windows caused her to jolt upright and fall out of bed. She cursed when she fell out of bed on her shoulder, pain searing through her shoulder and arm.
She shot to her feet when the sound of more glass broke downstairs. Terror and panic filled her at the thoughts of people trying to break into her house and she was about to run out of the room but a searing, blinding light came out of nowhere, burning her eyes and temporarily blinding her.
She cried out and slapped her hands over her eyes, stumbling backward onto her bed.
"Mom! Dad!" she screamed.
The sound of pounding footsteps ran into the room but her eyes were still burning to see what was going on. She opened her mouth to call out to her parents again but she felt something heavy hit her over the head. She cried out and fell to the floor, pain exploding through her head as black spots filled her vision.
Her knees buckled and she fell to the floor, pain exploding through her and her body growing weak. She felt someone roughly grab her hands and yank her arms behind her back and she felt something cold and metal clamp onto her wrists. The taste of copper filled her mouth and she tried to scream but nothing would come out.
She feebly tried to struggle as she was lifted into the air and marched out of the room. She tried to stay conscious but she found it too hard to stay awake as she descended into darkness.
