Luna P.O.V
"I'm so sorry!" Maya cried out. I grabbed her arm and pulled her closer to me hiding her behind me, as we were both squatting down behind some trash. I rubbed her back trying to comfort her. "I know, but now's not the time to apologise" I whisper yelled. Maya tried to hold in her cries. I looked around trying to spot Savannah. I was starting to panic. The last time I saw her was when we were with the other witches. She told us to run off and hide somewhere, while she helped to hold back the angry villagers. "Where is she?" Maya asked, sounding calmer now. "I'm sure she's on her way" I said looking at her with a small smile. "You can't feel her, right?" Maya asked with worry in her voice. "No, so she's not dead" I said firmly. Maya nodded. All that could be heard were the deafening screams of people in pain and the crackling of the flames all around us. It was hard to breathe because of all the smoke. A lot of angry and quick footsteps could be heard. I pulled Maya even closer to me. The only thing I could think of was putting a protection spell on her "By the power of the spirits of the night. Let all negativity be cast from sight. The energies of protective light. Protect Maya now with energies bright. Bring henceforth to her. So, mote it be". I saw Maya look up at me with teary eyes. "What about you?" she said, "Let me do it for you". I stopped her before she could cast a protection spell on me. "No, save your powers. You never know when you're going to need them". She nodded with a sad frown on her face. We heard a crack from above. Before I had the chance to react, a piece of wooden roof fell on top of us. Out of panic Maya somehow managed to create a wind so strong that it sent the wood flying. "Ah, shit" I said underneath my breath. "Are you okay?" Maya asked, looking at my now burned clothes. "I'm fine" I said looking into her eyes. Another set of footsteps could be heard. We both sat completely still. The footsteps stopped right in front of the rubbish that we were hiding behind. "Who-" Maya was cut off before she could finish her sentence.
"Oh my god, thank the Goddess you guys are safe" we were then engulfed in a big hug from Savannah. Maya then started crying again "I'm so sorry". "I know" she said before letting go. Savannah turned to me with a serious expression. "We need to leave, now" she said firmly. Savannah helped us stand. The fire was quickly spreading everywhere. At this point, it was impossible for us to get away without getting burnt. "Hold on" Savannah said as she turned towards the fire. Maya and I grabbed Savannah's hands. She started to chant underneath her breath. The fire began to disappear, making a path for us to walk on. Savannah started to walk, and Maya and I followed her. The smell of burning flesh and fabrics filled the air. We had to step over multiple dead bodies.
The energies from all the dead people's spirits were overwhelming me. My grip on Savannah's hand loosened. I felt her hand grabbing mine more tightly. "Hold on Luna" Savannah said quickly before she began chanting again. I felt dizzy and heavy. It felt like millions of people were sitting on my shoulders and back. I heard screaming from inside my head. Voices telling me to go off myself. "The villagers" I said grabbing my head in pain "They're screaming". Maya looked at me worried. I shook my head 'no'. "You must save your strength" I said before screaming out in pain. It felt like I was hit by lightning. I started to feel tears running down my face, or so I thought it was. I took my hand up to my cheek to wipe away the painful drops. When I looked at my hand, it was covered in blood. I looked at Maya and she looked back at me terrified. "Fuck it" she said before closing her eyes and folding her hands together while still holding onto Savannah's hand. "Make her peaceful, make her strong. Keep her safe from any harm. Please, Goddess, of the silvery light, keep her safe in your arms tonight" Maya chanted. The horrible pain I had been feeling started to slowly disappear. I could still hear all the voices yelling at me, but it did not hurt anymore. I smiled at her "Thank you". She gave me a smile back.
After walking for what seemed like hours, we finally got out of all the flames. We all turned around and looked at what was once our home. The atmosphere seemed heavy and dark. It just hit me now what had happened and what we had lost. Centuries of hard work burnt down by our very own village that we swore to protect so many years ago.
