ZYLITH.

Even if I were to force myself to study the rigorous Buddhist scriptures and transform myself into a heaven fearing legit monk, I knew I could not tolerate a person like Reuben by my side much longer. Not to mention now, when I was a person with all kinds of worldly desires.

I took a deep breath in, and glared back into Reuben's eyes, trying to use my eyes to signal him to get the hell out of here. But unsurprisingly so, he did not respond as I wanted him to respond.

On the contrary, he only looked even more intently, as if conveying through his eyes 'Let me have my fun while you carry on.'

The nerve!

I was already pissed at him for throwing me into the fire pit as bait, and now he was annoying me even more so.

When I finally could not bear it anymore and wanted to swear, with gritted teeth and a fake smile I mouthed, "Sire, I suggest you close your eyes since I am going to change my clothes now."

"Oh." Was the dry reply as Reuben perfunctorily closed his eyes.

I don't know why, but suddenly I felt really insulted.

I was about to unleash my swallowed anger when I heard knocks from outside the cottage the villagers allotted us.

Before I could grant anyone permission to enter, the old woman and her daughter whom I would be replacing in the marriage, slide open the door and came in with a happy expression on.

"My lady, please have something to eat before you travel." The old woman smiled lovingly as if I were her own daughter, and put a cup of water and some dried out pastries onto the vanity table where I was seated.

I in turn, let out a shallow smile at the both of them and decided to stay mum.

"My Lady, thank you so much for aiding my girl when there was no one willing to lent her a helping hand. I could not thank you enough." The old woman walked behind me to put my hair up into a hair bun while muttering words of gratitude in an emotional tone. The young girl on the other hand, stood beside her mother and sneaked shy glances at Reuben.

I raised a brow when I saw the little girl's amorous peeks at Reuben, and only silently pitied her for her bad eyesight.

Then I looked at the old woman behind me in the mirror, and with a soothing touch, I gently patted her hand on my shoulder and said, "Please ma'am, this is what I should do for the honor of my husband. You don't have to be so polite with me and instead thank my husband for being willing enough to lend your daughter a helping hand."

Since he wanted me to jump into the fire pit, I also was no longer afraid of making trouble for Reuben at all. And as expected, the moment I dragged him into the center of attention, the girl who was sneaking secret peeks at him, suddenly straightened up her waist and looked at Reuben with a pure sunny smile and blush on her face, "My lord, thank you so much for favoring and rescuing me from the demon's clutches today. This humble vassal will do everything in her power to serve you adequately."

Reuben did not even glance at her for a moment, but just kept staring into the mirror in front of me, as if he were only just staring at me with an unbeknownst smile.

However, the both of them soon seemed to have realized that they must've said something inappropriate, and as such the old woman and her daughter bowed their heads in apology with red pitiful eyes and a trembling body.

Reuben's gaze was really poisonous. I could only sigh and dismiss the both of them.

Then, I quickly put the dry pastry into my mouth and drank it with cold water to make the swallowing a bit better.

After the mother daughter duo left the room, there was finally some peace and quiet.

"Alright, they are gone already. You don't need to pretend to be mute any longer your Majesty." I sighed for the nth time today and drew the curtain of the changing room to change into a beautiful wedding dress. But in the midst of changing, I realized that something was wrong.

I seemed to be feeling dizzy for moment, but that weird feeling was soon gone, and so I quickly got changed and came out.

"What happened?" Reuben asked the moment he saw my pale face.

".... Nothing." Was my vague answer.

Reuben frowned a little but did not probe too much into the matter.

I looked myself into the mirror and stretched out my hand to tighten and neaten my messy bun while always feeling that something was really wrong here.

How is it that, the village chief who was in the center of it all, did not come to the procession to gift a bride to the river God? And these two women, even if they were apologetic and seemed concerned about me, they put on such a elaborate bridal bun onto me and lent me such a fancy wedding dress. Their sincerity was too overwhelming. As if... they were not sending out a counterfeit as bait to the river God, but rather.... a real sacrifice.

I almost choked at this abrupt conjecture.

Suddenly, I realized that this entire farce was way too coincidental, as if all of this was elaborately planned a long time ago. This apprehension suddenly sent a horrifying chill down my spine.

"... Your Maj... I mean, husband. Why do I feel this was all planned from the very beginning." I could not help but ask worriedly.

Reuben's smiling eyes were always on me, and did I see it wrong or were his eyes twinkling a little too much today?

"Hmm. It seems you are not that dumb my beautiful wife." Reuben mouthed with a sly grin.

I frowned even more when I heard him. So, he already knew something was very wrong with these villagers. Then, why did he let me be the bait?

My brows were knitted all the more when I figured this out.

"Do not worry. I will not let anything happen to my beloved wife. You can rest assured of that." He said, smilingly; but I was still not assured.

"Why? Why did it have to be me?" It's not like there really were no other females in our entourage.

Reuben just smiled mysteriously and said, "You will know soon."

And as such, I boarded onto the carriage that was supposed to take me towards my impending doom.
