Your Pov
As I hold Camilo tight, I hear someone approaching the door. "Camilo?" Papi Felix asks and peaks through. "Sorry but I need to borrow him for a second."He waves him over with a smile on his face as we depart. As Camilo closes the door he gives me a wink. I can't help but smile, feeling like my loving family has come back in a different form.
Turning around, I walk over to his shelf and notice all the little trinkets. I pick up a shining clay chameleon and turn it upside down.
"To my shifting boy on his 10th birthday, love Tia," is written on the tummy. I set it down gently as I hear Camilo through the door.
"No, I can't do that to her!" I hear him whisper shout. I lightly put my ear up to the door and hear Felix respond. "Why not? It won't hurt her, it'll just give her a nudge. Everyone in this family has had to make sacrifices."
I worry, hoping they're not talking about me. "She's already sacrificed plenty. Besides, what happened to us taking it slow?" Camilo argues back.
I back off from the door, knowing this is about me. 'What would I need to sacrifice, and for what?' I think to myself. "..think about it. She could be the one." I hear muffled through the door.
I scramble to sit down and act normal as the door opens. "Lo siento mi vida. Now, where were we?" Camilo says as he sits next to me. Grabbing his hand, I begin to speak, more wobbly than I would like.
"Um, I don't remember exactly." He looks me in my eyes and adjusts his position. "Estas bien?" He questions and moves some hair out of my face.
"Yeah, it's just.." I want to speak but no words come out. How do I tell him I was eavesdropping? "I just, um, feel a little dizzy," I lie. He stands and pulls me up with him.
"Well then, let's get you an arepa." He leads me out the door and to the kitchen, watching me carefully in case my 'dizziness' makes me fall.
I sit at the counter and notice him grab ingredients from the cupboards. "I'm not sure if you're aware, but, I don't think you can heal me with food," I point out.
He chuckles and sets everything down. "Yes I am aware. Tia keeps the emergency food in the back so we don't accidentally waste it if we aren't feeling unwell. Plus, I may not be able to heal people, but my food is delicious."
He grabs a cookie jar and pulls out an arepa. "Well, you'll need to make me something to prove it." I bite into it and pretend to feel better. "Gracias mi milo," I thank him.
He nods and screws the lid back on. "I can make something for you now if you're hungry." He looks to me with his hazel eyes that never fail to make me smile.
"I'd love that." I say as he puts everything back and grabs what he needs to make me my own dish, I can't help but think about what I overheard in the room.
I don't want to but it seems to be the only thing in my brain. "What are you making me?" I ask to try to ignore myself. He looks over to me with a big smirk on his face.
"Only the best Tamales in the world." My face lights up. "Oh please, I had those almost everyday growing up. Trust me when I say I'm the Tamale Master."
He spits out a scoff and gets the last of the ingredients. "Oh really? Highly doubt it. In case you forgot, my Tia's a pretty damn good cook." I get up from my seat and start taking down dishes from the cabinets.
"We'll just have to see about that. You make yours and I'll make mine." He raises a brow at me and grabs two large pots. "Fine, la familia will judge tonight at dinner."
"Done." I respond and shake his hand, agreeing to the deal. "I never would've thought of you as the competitive type (Y/n)." He states as I begin to get my station ready.
I pause and turn back to him. "Oh you haven't seen it yet. My brother and I used to be very competitive with each other. I am not the best loser." I say the last part through gritted teeth, not proud of it.
He grabs the blender and looks back to me. "Alright, well, you better get used to it if you're going to be challenging me."
I see a kitchen towel on the handle of the oven. I grab it and hit him with it. "Ok Mr. Cocky, we'll just have to see about that."
I spin back to my station and start to really focus. I wash, blend, and mix carefully, making sure everything is precise. I'm so concentrated on cooking I don't even realize when Julietta makes her way into the kitchen.
"It's nice to see other people cooking for once but you guys do realize I have to make dinner right?" She says catching Camilo's attention.
"Actually Tia, (Y/n) and I are going to be making dinner tonight. And if it's ok, you and the family are going to try our tamales and tell us who's better." She looks from him to me and I nod with a smile, knowing there's no way he'll win.
She shrugs her shoulders and holds her hands up as if to surrender. "Well, I guess you already started. Careful (Y/n), he turns into a real baby when he loses."
She leaves the room and I chuckle a little. His face reads disrespected. "That's a lie, I don't know where she got that from." He says pointing.
"Ah ok, looks like there's two sore losers in this relationship. Just don't be too upset when you lose. You don't really have a chance." He rolls his eyes and gets back to it.
